Dune director Denis Villeneuve offered an update on Dune: Part Two, his follow-up to the Best Picture-nominated film.

In an interview with ET Canada, Villeneuve spoke about the project, which is currently in pre-production. “It’s gonna be intense,” Villeneuve said. “I’m in prep right now. Monday morning, as soon as we leave Los Angeles, it will be to start to go on with prep. I cannot say nothing about the movie – I don’t like to talk about projects as I am doing them – but it’s probably going to be the biggest challenge of my career, again, because it’s even more complex than part one.”

Dune: Part Two will pick up where the first film left off, covering the second half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel. Villeneuve has previously confirmed that Part Two’s script is finished, and fans can expect to see the return of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya, the latter of whom is expected to have a much bigger role in the sequel. Casting rumors have also suggested additions in the form of Elvis and Midsommar stars Austin Butler and Florence Pugh, respectively.

From the project’s inception, Villenueve planned for Dune: Part One and Two to each cover half of the original novel, with Part Two being officially greenlit by Warner Bros. on October 26, 2021. Villeneuve has also stated that he has a Dune trilogy planned, with the first two films covering Herbert’s original book and the third film being based on the 1969 sequel novel Dune Messiah.

No official plot details have been released, but Villeneuve’s adherence to the source material means that fans of the novel should have an idea of where Part Two will go. It’s expected that the sequel will follow Paul Atreides’ journey with the Fremen as he becomes the prophesied Lisan al Gaib and attempts to prevent a future in which he sees a Holy War being fought in his name.

While Villeneuve will soon be resuming work on the sequel, Dune will be competing for 10 Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects and Best Picture. Villeneuve added that he’s “very proud for his crew” and stated that he has something prepared, but he’s not expecting to give a speech. He’s instead planning on applauding his colleagues who also worked on the film.

Fans can tune into the 94th Academy Awards on March 27 at 5 pm PT/8 pm ET to see Dune compete. Dune: Part Two is expected to release in 2023.
