Dungeons & Dragons Drakewarden Ranger Subclass Explaied

The newly-released Unearthed Arcana gave way to a new Monk and a new Ranger subclass, and both of them are geared heavily toward dragons. Dungeons and Dragons is about to have even more to offer with Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything so near, and with it many new subclasses to choose from.

For Rangers, the newest subclass is called “Drakewarden.” This allows the D&D Ranger to have a drake as a pet, breathe like a dragon, and learn “Thaumaturgy” as a Ranger spell. Nearly all of the class features are based upon the summoning of the minor dragon, and it’s abilities, but the Ranger PC gains some solid benefits as well.

Below, Dungeons & Dragons players will find everything they need to know about the new Drakewarden class, as well as an explanation of their abilities and features.

D&D: Drakewarden Class Features Explained

“Draconic Gift” and “Drake Companion” unlock at level 3 for the Drakewarden Ranger. “Draconic Gift” gives the Drakewarden the ability to read, write, and speak Draconic. It also adds “Thaumaturgy” to their Ranger spells. “Drake Companion” allows the Ranger to summon a drake (the dragon, not the musician) as an action in a thirty-foot range. The drake listens to the Ranger’s commands, and it’s damage type is based on its “Draconic Essence.”

Basically, when the drake is summoned, the Ranger picks one of Dungeons & Dragons’ dragon-damage types (acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison). The drake is then immune to said damage type, and uses it to do damage with its “Bite” and “Infused Strikes.” “Infused Strikes” is a reaction the drake can take that lets it add an extra 1d6 to another creature’s weapon attack (upon a hit). “Infused Strikes” has a thirty-foot range, the Drake has to be able to see the creature, and the damage done is the same type as “Draconic Essence”.

The drake shares the Ranger’s initiative, and can move and use its reaction without any instruction, but the Ranger must expend a bonus action to command it to do anything other than dodge with its action (unless the Ranger is unconscious). The drake sticks around for an amount of hours equal to the Ranger’s proficiency bonus, until it falls to zero HP, is summoned again, or the Ranger dies. After being summoned, the Ranger can’t summon the drake again until after a long rest, or after using a level 1 (or higher) spell slot to call it back.

“Bond of Fang and Scale” unlocks at level 7, and gives the Ranger resistance to the damage chosen for “Draconic Essence.” While the drake is summoned into a Dungeons & Dragons game, the Ranger can choose to either give it a forty-foot swim speed and make it amphibious, or to give the drake wings and a flying speed of forty-feet. The drake also gets another 1d6 added to its “Bite” attack.

“Drake’s Breath” is a level 11 Drakewarden feature. “Drake’s Breath” allows the Ranger to use an action to breathe like a dragon, or to have their drake do the same. The breath comes out in a thirty-foot cone, can be any of the five dragon-damage types, and spawns a DEX save throw against the Ranger’s spell DC. “Drake’s Breath” does 6d6 damage, and then 8d6 at level 15. The breath can only be used once per long rest, unless the Ranger uses a third-level slot or higher to do it again.

Level 15 brings “Perfected Bond”, which upgrades the drake to large size, and adds another 1d6 to its “Bite” damage. Lastly, while within thirty feet of one another, the Drakewarden Ranger can use their reaction to give themselves or the drake resistance to the damage taken.

With all of these Draconic abilities coming into play, it begs the question as to why they’re being added now. Whatever the reason, the Ranger could always use new subclasses to choose from, and this one has a lot to offer any new Dungeons and Dragons character.
