Dungeons & Dragons’ Sorcerers have a unique relationship with magic. While Wizards manipulate the arcane forces of reality through careful study and Clerics through devotion to their god, Sorcerers each tap into energy the stems from their bloodline or circumstances. Each Sorcerer subclass represents a different origin for this power, whether it be divine heritage or the chaotic fluctuations of wild magic.

Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers call upon the power of the game’s titular behemoths, either through direct parentage or pact that affected the character’s bloodline. One of the original three Sorcerous Origins included in the Player’s Handbook, the Draconic Bloodline is a solid basis for a character specializing in elemental damage. Here are the best options for such a build, from ability scores and feats to metamagic and spells.

Prioritize the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer’s Charisma and Constitution

A Sorcerer’s spellcasting ability score is Charisma, which makes it the most important for the build. It also lets the Sorcerer act as the party’s “face,” making social checks outside of combat. After Charisma, try to max out their Constitution. This beefs up the character’s hit points while also helping them with Constitution saving throws made to maintain Concentration on their spells. Third comes Dexterity, since the character’s AC will be 13 + Dexterity due to their Draconic Resilience subclass trait. Wisdom should be fourth since it affects passive Perception checks, while Intelligence edges out Strength since it affects more skill checks.

Dragonborn Is the Best and Most Obvious Racial Choice

While Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything’s new options for racial ability score increases make choosing the “right” race less of a necessity than it once was, it’s still important to pick one that works with the character’s class and subclass rather than against it. Any race with a bonus to Charisma will help, but the best option for a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer is also the most obvious: Dragonborn, specifically the Revised Dragonborn presented in the Draconic Options Unearthed Arcana. These let the player put a +2 in Charisma and a +1 in Constitution while still playing into the flavor of of the subclass. They can also choose between Metallic, Chromatic or Gem Dragon subraces.

While any of the options are good, Amethyst Gem Dragons get a rare resistance to force damage and a breath weapon that deals it. They also get access to telepathy, an undervalued feature that can help a party coordinate without needing to speak aloud. It also bypasses the need to share a language with a creature. If that wasn’t enough, Gem Dragonborn can fly for a minute a day, replicating the effect of a third level spell, albeit with a limited duration. If any Dungeon Masters are weary of using Unearthed Arcana, the Revised Dragonborn race will be revised and published in the upcoming Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons sourcebook.

Elemental Adept Is an Essential Feat for a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer

While Sorcerers will want to use their ability score increases to max out their Charisma and boost other ability scores, players should also consider taking a feat to enhance their build. Fifth Edition has a massive list of choices, but only a few are specifically useful to a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer. Elemental Adept is the most powerful, giving a slight boost to damage on spells of a specific elemental type while also letting them ignore resistance. The options presented are acid, cold, fire, lightning and thunder, but only cold, fire and lightning are good options. The rest are hampered by the class’ limited spell selection.

War Caster is another good feat, helping the Sorcerer concentrate on spells while also letting them use their empowered cantrips for opportunity attacks. Metamagic Adept from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is meant to allow other classes to play with the Sorcerer’s Metamagic options, but it’s just as good for Sorcerer themselves. It lets them expand their range of Metamagic options with the added benefit of two extra sorcery points. Good Metamagic options are Twinned Spell and Empowered Spell.

The Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer’s Metamagic Can Cheat Damage Types

The Sorcerer gets one extra option for customization beyond even other spellcasting classes: Metamagic. With two at third level and two more gained at 10th and 17th level, Sorcerers eventually end up with four known options for modifying the traits of their spells using sorcery points.

The most important one for this build is Transmuted Spell from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. This lets the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer change any spell’s damage type to the favored elemental damage type they chose for their Draconic Ancestry. Other good options are Quicken Spell (to cast a spell and a cantrip in the same round), Careful Spell (to avoid hitting allies with powerful splash damage effects) and Subtle Spell (to cast spells on the fly without anyone noticing).

Choose Spells That Let the Sorcerer Rain Down Elemental Destruction

The most important part of any spellcasting build is its spell selection. While Sorcerers can learn fewer spells from a smaller pool than other spellcasting classes, the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer makes up for this by relying on a narrow subset of elemental damage spells.

If they chose Fire for their Draconic Ancestry trait, the essential spells are Scorching Ray, Fireball, Wall of Fire and Immolation. If they chose Cold they should make sure to grab Ice Knife, Ice Storm and Cone of Cold. Lightning specialists should take Witch Bolt, Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning. While Fire is the best of these options by far, Transmute Spell will let any other build make up for their limited selection by taking Fire spells and changing them to Cold or Lightning.
