Jungle Cruise stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt reportedly have some great ideas for a sequel to the hit Disney adventure movie. Jungle Cruise first hit theatres on July 30, 2021, and is available to stream free through Disney+ in November. The plot follows the captain of a small riverboat (Johnson) who takes a scientist (Blunt) and her brother (Jack Whitehall) through the jungle in search of the mythical Tree of Life. After plans fell through for an earlier adaptation in 2011, former WWE superstar Johnson signed onto the new project in 2015, with Golden Globe winner Blunt joining the cast in 2018.

The movie is based on the eponymous Walt Disney theme park ride, and was helmed by Spanish-American director Jaume Collet-Serra, with a screenplay by Glenn Ficarra, John Requa, and Murder On The Orient Express writer Michael Green. Released simultaneously in theatres as well as on streaming platform Disney+, the movie crossed $213 million at the global box office, and a Jungle Cruise 2 has been announced. The sequel movie Blunt and Johnson reprising their roles from the first movie following its successful release. Positive reviews and audience word-of-mouth praise have seemingly contributed to the successful Jungle Cruise box office and streaming run that Disney was hoping for, and this should help to generate plenty of hype for the sequel.

It seems that both Johnson and Blunt enjoyed their experience, based on comments from producer Hiram Garcia. He revealed that the actors have a host of ideas for the follow-up, and there is plenty of scope that could turn this into a successful movie franchise. Speaking in an interview with Variety, Garcia said that both Johnson and Blunt are “so involved” in the story and have “brilliant ideas” about their characters’ journeys. The producer added that the sequel is generating plenty of excitement for Disney. Check out his full comments in the video below:

No release date has been confirmed as of yet for Jungle Cruise 2. With Johnson and Collet-Serra busy wrapping on Black Adam, the eleventh instalment of the DC Extended Universe series of movies, it seems unlikely the two will be getting around to filming a Jungle Cruise sequel any time soon. 49-year-old Californian Johnson has had a busy couple of years, having recently finished filming action-comedy Red Notice alongside Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. The actor also has Black Adam and DC League of Super-Pets in post-production, along with four different projects announced as well. As for Blunt, the British star is in talks to join the cast of Christopher Nolan’s new film Oppenheimer, which is entering pre-production, as well as starring in Western TV series The English, which is currently filming.

Jungle Cruise fans will likely be forced to wait a while for any sequel that might be made, but it seems that interest and enthusiasm is high for the project. Disney will be hoping that a follow-up will not have the delays and post-production issues that Jungle Cruise experienced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that they can enjoy a successful box office run across the world. Whatever the release date for Jungle Cruise 2, however, it’s encouraging to see that its stars are genuinely invested in the project.
