DWTS Cheryl Burke Thinks JoJo Siwa Could Be At A Disadvantage

According to Dancing With The Stars vet Cheryl Burke, JoJo Siwa’s time at the Abby Lee Dance Company may actually put her at a disadvantage. DWTS is returning for season 30 with a whole new cast, ranging from Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee to former lead on The Bachelor Matt James. Aside from those two, the 2021 run of the hit ABC show will also feature Lori Loughlin’s daughter Olivia Jade Giannulli, Beverly Hills, 90210 star Brian Austin Green and The Talk’s Amanda Kloots, among others.

The new season of DWTS will also be making history by pairing JoJo with a female partner. Prior to this, the celebrity dance competition never featured same-sex partners. The Dance Moms alum came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community earlier this year through social media and introduced her fans to her girlfriend. According to JoJo, she didn’t even know it was an option to be partnered with a woman until it was offered to her, and she’s excited to be normalizing it for kids in her demographic. As for who JoJo is excited to dance with, she’s hoping for Jenna Johnson, Britt Stewart or Lindsay Arnold, though she would be happy with any of the pro dancers.

Although fans probably think being a dancer would set you ahead of the competition, DWTS pro Cheryl begs to differ. “I prefer almost the athletes because when you have dance experience and it’s not ballroom dance, it’s like you have to un-train your brain and it’s a lot harder to develop new habits when you’ve been doing something for so long,” Cheryl told E! News. She went on to comment on how even though JoJo’s “an amazing dancer,” she’s still “not ballroom.” This could hinder her because she’s only trained in other forms of dance. “I think the judges are going to judge all the dancers who are on this season a lot harder than normal,” Cheryl said.

Cheryl also talked about who her own partner might be. She seemingly rejected the idea of Matt dancing alongside her but gave no indication of who else it could be. All she said was that she and her male counterpart for the season met and had their first rehearsal recently. Cheryl could be wishing she was partnered with Matt, though, given Bachelor franchise stars’ track record on DWTS. Kaitlyn Bristowe, Hannah Brown and Joe Amabile have all competed on the show, with Kaitlyn and Hannah taking home Mirrorball Trophies.

Dancing With The Stars has been going strong for 30 seasons, and shaking things up by having same-sex partners is gearing this season up to be one of the best ones yet. JoJo is talented in many ways, and whether or not her dance skills will help her in the competition, it will be great for fans to see her perform. Between JoJo, Matt, Suni and everyone else, fans of the show will have a lot of celebs to root for.

Dancing With The Stars premieres September 20 at 8pm on ABC.
