E3 2021 Is Full Of Early Access Games

This year’s E3 Expo unveiled many new games for fans to look forward to, as well as updates for previously-announced projects and release dates for those that are nearing the end of development. Arguably one of the biggest categories to appear during this year’s presentations, however, was early access games. There are several titles that will be coming to early access in the near future, a trend that seems to highlight the still-growing impact this release model has had on the gaming industry.

The early access funding model has a long history, and there have been many successful titles that first launched under early access. DayZ, Subnautica, and, more recently, Valheim, are all successful titles that have made use of this method. In 2013, Steam unveiled its own release service – Steam Early Access – to help creators make use of the Steam platform for early access releases. Other gaming-focused platforms have followed suit. This helped to solidify the model as a viable standard within the industry, and it now seems that it will continue to grow even more popular growing forward.

Some gaming fans, however, have mixed feelings towards early access. As straightforward and sound as the concept seems, it’s easily exploitable. At its best, early access allows players to experience the game ahead of schedule as well as provide valuable feedback to developers while the game is still in its early stages. At its worst, people are paying for an unfinished product that could see months or even years before being completed, or perhaps may not ever be finished at all. Despite the inherent uncertainty in early access, however, it’s continued to gain reputation as a reliable release method – so much so that E3 2021 was packed full of early access titles.

Which Early Access Games Were Revealed At E3 2021?

One of the upcoming projects that garnered a lot of excitement among fans is One Lonely Outpost, a Stardew Valley-esque simulator set in space. Currently the release date is scheduled for 2022. A similarly-structured game, titled Starmancer, also announced its early access release date during this year’s E3, and will release on August 5. Starmancer will be published by Chucklefish, the studio responsible for developing Starbound as well as publishing Stardew Valley. Both games can be wishlisted on Steam ahead of their early access release.

Also dropping in early access form on August 5 is Death Trash, a gorepunk RPG with an emphasis on player freedom and action gameplay in the face of cosmic horrors. Phantom Abyss is scheduled to come out on June 22, and Black Skylands will release shortly thereafter on July 9. Mythical Games’ controversial project Blankos Block Party also made an appearance at this year’s E3 Expo, making it one of many titles to reveal their entry into the world of early access.
