Edgar Wright Debunks Report He Wont Direct Baby Driver 2

Writer/director Edgar Wright debunks a recent report that he won’t direct Baby Driver 2 despite having penned the script for the action sequel. The original film centered on Ansel Elgort’s Baby, a getaway driver in Atlanta desperately seeking to be freed of his criminal life after meeting and falling in love with local diner waitress Debora. Alongside Elgort, the ensemble cast for Baby Driver included Lily James, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Jamie Foxx, Jon Bernthal, CJ Jones and Kevin Spacey.

Wright spent the better part of two decades developing Baby Driver and the ambitious hook of meticulously coordinating everything to the soundtrack for the film. he film would finally hit theaters in 2017 to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, praised for its unique craftsmanship and style, while seeing mild criticism for its screenplay, and was a box office smash, grossing over $226 million against its $34 million budget. Thanks to this success, talks of a Baby Driver 2 have swirled in the years since and while Wright is indeed working on it, the filmmaker has had to counter some reports regarding its development.

After confirming in an interview he had finished penning the script for the film but was uncertain of how he would approach it, IGN took to Twitter with the story stating Wright admitted he may not be the one to direct Baby Driver 2. The filmmaker swiftly responded by debunking the angle, retorting he hadn’t stated any such admission, though both he and the publication have deleted their tweets since. Wright’s response to the story claiming he may not direct Baby Driver 2 is a pretty respectful one given it having changed the angle of his quote to something not in line with what he originally said, making for IGN’s deletion of their post and subsequent update addressing their misinterpretation as admirable. The filmmaker recently discussed the film’s development confirming he had finished the Baby Driver 2 script but was only prepared to direct it if he could find a way to make it fun. While it could have been argued his comment might have implied that Wright would hand the reins off to another filmmaker, his passion for the making of the first film, and his projects in general, certainly made it difficult to imagine him not electing to direct the film himself.

On the heels of releasing his psychological thriller Last Night in Soho, Wright’s upcoming schedule is relatively stacked with an exciting roster of projects. Some of his upcoming projects include an adaptation of the thriller The Chain, a new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man and an adaptation of the sci-fi drama Set My Heart To Five. Despite this busy schedule, Wright’s completion of the Baby Driver 2 script and the wheels clearly turning in his head on how to approach the material does leave the door open for him to add it on to his docket sooner rather than later.
