Edgar Wright Has An Idea For The Next James Bond Film

Following a successful yet emotional conclusion to Daniel Craig’s James Bond era with No Time to Die, there has been much discussion regarding who will fill the role of the iconic spy and what direction the new films will head in. Well, it appears acclaimed filmmaker Edgar Wright has contributed to the discussion, revealing that he has an idea for the next film in the ongoing 007 franchise.

Promoting his upcoming horror film Last Night in Soho, Wright expressed his enthusiasm for the James Bond films on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while also sharing that he has been cooking up an idea for a possible pitch in the near future. “I think Daniel Craig has so made an indelible stamp on that franchise that I think you have to go in a slightly different direction,” Wright says.

“Because I don’t think there’s anything to be gained by continuing in the same vein, and I would certainly think that it would be interesting to try and – I mean, I do have a take, which if ever they ask me, I’ll definitely pitch it to them. [Laughs] So I’m not going to say it on the podcast,” Wright said of the James Bond franchise’s future. “But I do think that, when I sometimes see some of the names being bandied around, I can’t quite see it, in terms of to me they feel like Daniel Craig 2.” Wright would further add that he feels 007 movies are either “dark chocolate or milk chocolate,” meaning dark chocolate represents the grittier takes on Ian Fleming’s character as seen in Craig’s and even Timothy Dalton’s portrayals, while the milk chocolate is the lighter, more playful and humorous side to the character that is displayed in the Roger Moore adaptations. “My theory is that the Bonds have got to be like dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and I think you’ve got to alternate.”

Wright’s filmography, which includes films like Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Baby Driver, and now Last Night in Soho, along with his experience dabbling in multiple genres, are clearly an indication that the director has the talent to helm a large scale Bond production while also pushing it in a fresh direction. However, any news relating to the next James Bond installment seems as if it won’t be released for quite a while, as long-time Bond producer Barbara Broccoli stated that the search for the next 007 would be put on hold to allow Craig to celebrate his accomplishments.

So many fans once again seem to be pushing for a more serious take on the next James Bond, especially judging from the increased speculation around intense veteran actors like Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender, or Tom Hardy filling the role. But Wright’s Bond story approach and casting ideas may just be what the next generation of fans and this franchise needs.

Fans can get a glimpse of Wright’s unique style in Last Night in Soho because hey, he could just be the next Bond director to step in. Wright’s upcoming psychological thriller, which he co-wrote with 1917’s Krysty Wilson-Cairns, stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin McKenzie, and Matt Smith, and it takes place across present-day and 1960s London.

James Bond’s latest adventure, No Time to Die, is currently playing in theatres.
