Elden Ring Will The Full Game Support Crossplay

Elden Ring will support FromSoftware’s usual flavor of co-op and invasion multiplayer, but its stance on crossplay is still up in the air. The recent Elden Ring closed network test’s first impressions were positive for many players, and answered a lot of questions on how it will operate mechanically, but the extent of its multiplayer network is still unknown. Cross-generation support for multiplayer seems to be a given based on the closed network test, but full-fledged crossplay could help bolster the Elden Ring multiplayer community in the long run.

In its traditional sense, crossplay refers to multiplayer which operates across numerous platforms, and not just those in the same console family. Many other modern multiplayer games allow PlayStation and Xbox players to join the same lobbies and parties. In shooters specifically, PC is usually separated from the console matchmaking or given an opt-in option because of the advantages of mouse and keyboard controls in that particular genre. FromSoftware’s previous games, such as Dark Souls, are usually played with a controller, even on PC, so this wouldn’t necessarily be an issue with Elden Ring since precise aiming isn’t part of the multiplayer equation.

The recent closed network test only included PlayStation and Xbox, and these two platforms were not granted crossplay during Elden Ring’s multiplayer trial. Cross generation play was supported, meaning PlayStation 4 players could play with those on PS5, and Xbox One with Series X/S, but full crossplay was not possible. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Elden Ring won’t have crossplay when it launches, but there has so far been no official word from either the developer nor the publisher. The latter addressed the cross-generation play in a Bandai Namco blog post when the closed network test was announced, so news on crossplay may be announced similarly sometime before Elden Ring’s launch date.

Elden Ring’s Predecessors Didn’t Support Crossplay

So far FromSoftware has not implemented crossplay in any of their previous titles which support multiplayer. Bloodborne is a PlayStation 4 exclusive, so it was impossible, but the Dark Souls trilogy was multi-platform and didn’t have crossplay options. It should be kept in mind, though, that Dark Souls 3 – the most recent in the series – released in 2016, which was before crossplay became as commonplace as it is now. It’s not impossible that crossplay will be implemented before Elden Ring releases, but expectations should probably be tempered since it wasn’t possible in the closed network test.

It’s safe to say that crossplay would be a huge benefit to Elden Ring and its community. At this point, crossplay has almost come to be expected by consumers for certain types of games, and supporting it would be helpful to the game’s long-term player base. Those dedicated to FromSoftware’s games typically play them for years, but online player counts tend to dwindle long after release. Combining the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox multiplayer pools would go a long way toward mitigating the inevitable decline in population. Playing Elden Ring will be best during launch week, in terms of its active multiplayer community, but implementing crossplay would help in keeping co-op and invasions active.
