Ellen DeGeneres has weighed in on the Saturday Night Live sketch “Mellen” which was a direct parody of The Ellen Show. SNL season 47 kicked off just a few weeks ago. So far, the guest hosts have included Owen Wilson (Loki), Kim Kardashian West, Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and most recently, Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso). Kiernan Culkin (Father of the Bride) is slated to host November 6’s episode, as the series is taking off for Halloween weekend.

The Ellen Show has been on the air since 2003. On her talk show, DeGeneres became famous for dancing, her positive spirit and her generosity, often giving thousands of dollars away to families in need. After 19 years of hosting the talk show, The Ellen Show runs for its last season this year. The announcement came after DeGeneres faced accusations of mistreating her crew. Additionally, DeGeneres had confessed that it was hard to always remain so upbeat and that the personality she was portraying on the show isn’t the real her.

DeGeneres addressed the parody on The Ellen Show. It turns out that she loved SNL’s “Mellen” sketch so much that she hopes it comes to fruition. DeGeneres said that the toxic-masculine version of The Ellen Show is not only something she “would watch” but joked that she wanted to team up with Sudeikis and “do a show like that.” She also noted that she was “flattered by” the parody– after all, imitation is the highest form of flattery. In the sketch, Sudeikis plays a male version of Ellen who “legally changed his name” to Mellen. The show is set up in the same format as The Ellen Show where the audience dances in the beginning and Ellen interviews and pranks her guests but it’s done with a “hard masculine edge.”

Sudeikis manages to perfectly capture Ellen’s mannerisms as he “nut taps” audience members and demonstrates “awkward male dancing.” Sudeikis’ talent and portrayal of her is probably a big reason why DeGeneres is such a big fan of the sketch. The likelihood of DeGeneres and Sudeikis filming “Mellen” after filming wraps for The Ellen Show and Ted Lasso is highly unlikely but a hilarious thought nonetheless. SNL has targeted DeGeneres for many years as she referenced Kate McKinnon’s impressions of her. Regardless, Ellen remains a good sport about it.

SNL is renowned for its parodies, political satire and celebrity impressions. The show wouldn’t have lasted long if it didn’t continue to evolve with the times and make fun of political and pop culture news that is relevant today. The nighttime sketch show managed to get at least one last jab in at DeGeneres before her show goes off the air for good. Even though DeGeneres will be off the air soon won’t be as culturally relevant anymore, SNL will never run out of material.
