Elon Musk and Kanye West continue to be their eccentric, highly questionable selves as the rapper re-announced his intention to run in the 2020 US presidential election and the Tesla CEO lent his support. The pair’s friendship is well documented.

Kanye West initially announced a 2020 presidential campaign back in 2015 while delivering another rambling award acceptance speech at the MTV VMAs. The overall political climate then was very different than it is now, as even Trump’s presidential bid seemed like a stunt or a political joke to some people. Now, four unfathomably divisive and tumultuous years after Trump’s election, a Kanye West presidency is taken much more seriously and met with far more dread.

That’s a large part of why West’s announcement that he hasn’t given up on his plans to run has so many people talking. On Saturday, he stated on Twitter that he’s running for president and, shortly thereafter, Elon Musk replied to the tweet saying “You have my full support!” Kanye West’s tweet didn’t provide any other information aside from the hashtag #2020VISION, leaving us all to speculate and writhe in our collective terror.

Is Elon Musk Serious? Is Kanye? Is Anyone?

Elon Musk has had a public friendship with Kanye West dating back years and the two have been pictured or reported spending time together in multiple instances. Most recently, Musk and West posted images of them hanging out on July 1 of this year. There’s a realistic chance that Musk unironically supports Kanye’s presidential aspirations, despite that it’s almost impossible to tell if the things Elon Musk says on Twitter are his actual opinions. That said, Musk has a history of downplaying the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic and arguing against social distancing efforts and lockdowns that lines up rather well with the political philosophies of Donald Trump.

Kanye West is also a friend of Trump’s, having stated numerous times that he loves and feels empowered by the US president. West went through an odd phase after returning from a hiatus during which he wore a MAGA hat and downplayed popular pro-racial equality sentiments. Amidst that phase of his public life, he released an album almost entirely focused on his mental health issues, helped publish several other records for artists signed to his record label, and promptly returned to a life of relative obscurity until recently.

If West is serious, it’s worth noting that he’s done none of the steps required to become a presidential candidate and hasn’t even declared a party. In a few of his songs, he’s mentioned wanting to be Republican and wanting to raise Republican children. Based on that and his admiration of Donald Trump, it makes the most sense that he’d run on that side of the aisle, but then he’d be going up against Trump. Alternatively, the sentiment on Twitter is that West would run as a Democratic – based on nothing other than him being black – and try to take liberal votes away from Democratic nominee Joe Biden to sway the election in Trump’s favor. Either way, it looks like Musk’s support of Kanye, whether the rapper is serious or not, is real.
