Ember Is the Elder Scrolls Online Companion Everyone Has Been Waiting For

Elder Scrolls Online has been a big hit for Bethesda. This fantasy-based MMORPG allows faithful devotees, as well as newcomers, to experience the dense lore and sweeping scope on which the giant series was built. The franchise’s reputation has only grown with the release of various ESO expansions, the latest being High Isle, the game’s sixth major expansion pack. With Elder Scrolls VI still a long way down the horizon, the online platform is arguably the best way of getting one’s RPG fantasy fix in the meantime.

With the entire game being offered for free until April 26 to coincide with the release of High Isle, now is the time to don one’s armor and head to Tamriel in search of adventure. The latest DLC will bring in a host of new content for players to enjoy. However, the best new inclusion may be two brand-new companions in the form of Isobel, the Breton knight, and the Khajit sorcerer, Ember.

The companion system is one of ESO’s fundamental gameplay mechanics, allowing players to choose a buddy to accompany them on their quests and, of course, assist them in combat. These non-player characters are vital to success. However, picking the right one is a tricky choice, especially when considering the various pros and cons, and indeed likes and dislikes, each companion has to offer.

Central to this is the rapport system, essentially the means by which the relationship between a companion and player is measured. Performing positive actions and ensuring that a companion’s likes are taken into consideration will build rapport, while performing acts of which they disapprove, be it thieving, murder or something more arbitrary like traveling by boat, damages rapport and can jeopardize a duo’s future together.

The problem with this system is, of course, that companions can become restrictive to a player’s actions, especially those with a high sense of morality or an inflexible ethical stance. For players looking for more nefarious adventures to pursue, finding a companion who doesn’t mind a little rule-breaking is somewhat crucial.

That is, potentially, where a figure like Ember comes in. Although details about the Khajiit sorcerer remain vague, it seems as though Ember’s inclusion is at least in part due to many player gripes regarding morally inflexible buddies who disapprove of trivial (and not so trivial) crimes. In fact, a companion who actively relishes the chance to do no good, and therefore approves of a player’s amoral actions, seems to be the ideal fit for Tamriel’s more unscrupulously-minded adventurers. The simultaneous introduction of Isobel and Ember seems to have been a deliberate move to give players a choice of two relatively polarized figures, Ember’s streetwise amorality contrasting with the Breton knight’s more rigid sense of honor and nobility.

Ember’s benefits won’t be restricted to their moral ambiguity. Like all companions, Ember can have multiple skills assigned from different categories, usually in the form of five normal skills and one ultimate skill. Being a sorcerer, they will have the ability to utilize weather attacks, call upon magical armor and potentially restore ally health, depending on build and skills. As is common across ESO, any companion can have their equipment, including armor, weapons, and accessories, altered and adapted to suit the player’s needs. All of this means players will have even more ways to explore Tamriel and influence their own players with High Isle’s new companions.
