This holiday season, starting December 17, Amazon gifts audiences With Love. The new Latinx-led series consists of 5 episodes and follows the Diaz family over the course of various celebrations and charts their romances and relationships. Created by Gloria Calderón Kellett, who previously brought audiences the beloved One Day At A Time reboot, the show’s first episode takes place on Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) as the Diaz siblings prepare to make important romantic announcements.

Lily (Emeraude Toubia, Shadowhunters) has just broken up with her perfect boyfriend, much to everyone’s chagrin, and Jorge Jr. (Mark Indelicato, Dead of Summer) is about to introduce his new boyfriend to the family. Meanwhile, Jorge’s best friend and roommate Nick (Desmond Chiam, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) is single and ready to mingle, and a stranger (for now) named Santiago (Rome Flynn, Raising Dion) is ready for a change after saying goodbye to a loved one.

The energetic cast spoke to Screen Rant about the journeys their characters take over the course of 5 episodes, and how their stories intersect.

Screen Rant: Emeraude, Lily’s journey to love and self-actualization is kind of the backbone of the story. Where is she when we meet her in the first episode?

Emeraude Toubia: You meet Lily at a very crucial point in her life. She has her perfect on paper boyfriend, and she decides to end it. But ending it means her whole family finding out that she no longer has a boyfriend.

Her journey is finding her own life by still respecting her family traditions. We always want to make our parents proud, and I think that is very important for Lily. She’s navigating through life, trying to find out what her rules are, and what kind of love she wants for herself.

Santiago has his own parental baggage that he is bringing to the table on this journey. Can you talk about where we find him, Rome?

Rome Flynn: It’s an interesting way to introduce a character. You just see me crying, right off the bat. But I think it immediately humanizes him and gives him character, and gives people the opportunity to go, “Okay, I’m paying attention now.” You see how he deals with the realization that he’s lost somebody, and also how he deals with that situation with his dad.

I don’t want to give any storyline away, but there’s points where they revisit that together. It doesn’t have to be this somber reality; there’s the reality where we celebrate that person. And we see that, and we see them enjoy that together. It’s more so, “Look at what this person had a hand in creating.” It’s more a celebratory thing, which I think we should do more of.

Desmond, Nick seems like he’s the life of the party and just there to have a good time. But his feelings run deeper than other characters may imagine. Can you talk about his friendship with Lily and Jorge?

Desmond Chiam: Yeah, you really do meet him at the point where he’s like, “Hakuna Matata,” and that whole thing. “No worries.” He’s a big flirt.

But as is the reality behind a lot of people like that – and we all know people like that – there’s something deeper going on. [Behind] this whole constant stream of women, this constant flirting thing, unconsciously they’re seeking something. Maybe it’s love.

And he starts to learn that, I think, through a supernova of an encounter in the first episode. I don’t want to spoil too much, but it sets him off on a path of, “Ooh, here’s a feeling I haven’t felt before. What is it?” And it’s that whole exploration of love.
