Encanto’s Lin-Manuel Miranda said that there is potential for the world and characters of Disney’s 60th animated feature to be further explored in a sequel or spinoff.

In an interview with Collider, the songwriter and performer acknowledged that while there are no plans for any sequels as of yet, the immense success of Encanto indicates a desire for more stories set in the universe of the new animated classic. “I do think there’s an appetite to further explore the Madrigal family, given how many characters there are, and how many gifts there are. And also where we leave the story,” Miranda said. “Now there is sort of this more fully realized version of themselves. Which way can we go?”

“I think it’s a question of when and not if, and what form that will take,” Miranda continued. “Is that another movie? Is that a series? Is that a stage adaptation where we have a little more time, because stage shows are generally an hour longer than movies? And we haven’t had conversations as to what form that will take, but I mean, yeah, I’d be down to continue to explore that.”

Miranda went on to discuss how he would love to delve deeper into certain characters from the film who may not have had as much focus as main character Mirabel Madrigal. “I love writing for Dolores and Camilo. I’d love to write more for them. I’d love to write more for Isabela,” he said. “So I’m not sure what the next form of that will be, but we haven’t had specific conversations about it’s this or it’s this.”

Encanto centers around the extraordinary Madrigal family, whose members are each blessed with a unique power by the magic of their home. In a seemingly cruel twist of fate, 15-year-old Mirabel finds herself to be the only Madrigal to lack a gift. This apparent snub, however, does nothing to lessen Mirabel’s determination to save her family and home when the magic begins to disappear and the various powers the Madrigals have enjoyed for generations start to go awry.

The movie has received widespread acclaim, especially for its soundtrack by Lin Manuel-Miranda. Its ballad “Dos Oruguitas” was nominated for Best Original Song at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, and the catchy tune “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is the highest charting Disney song of the 21st century.

Encanto is currently showing in theaters and is available to stream on Disney+.
