Endgame Proved Captain America & Iron Man Were Both Wrong In The Avengers

Avengers: Endgame proved that both Captain America and Iron Man were wrong in The Avengers. The first three phases of the MCU were dominated by Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, unarguably the most significant of the Avengers. Captain America was seen as the literal first Avenger, the Living Legend of World War II, a man whose unflinching moral code oriented the team. In contrast, Tony Stark was a billionaire playboy genius philanthropist, the man whose technology made the Avengers possible.

Unfortunately, the dynamic between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark was a strained one from the start. That was clearly seen in The Avengers, when their first team-up swiftly devolved into an argument – granted, with a nudge from the Mind Stone. “You’re not the guy to make the sacrifice play,” Captain America snarled at Iron Man, “to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you.” Equally angry, Tony dismissed Cap with an equally barbed retort. “You’re a lab rat, Rogers,” he fumed, years of resentment hearing his father talk about Captain America pouring out of him. “Everything special about you came out of a bottle!”

As noted by the Marvel Facts Twitter account, Avengers: Endgame proved both heroes wrong about the other. This was most evident in Tony Stark’s sacrifice, with Iron Man choosing to wield the unlimited power of the Infinity Gauntlet – even though he knew it would cost him his life. At that moment, Stark proved himself a true hero, sacrificing himself to save the universe itself from the madness of Thanos.

But Avengers: Endgame also offered a more subtle rebuttal of the claim there is nothing inherently special about Steve Rogers. It did this by showing he was worthy to wield Mjolnir, because worthiness is about your character, not your abilities. In truth, Steve Rogers had been worthy long before he ever became Captain America, for he had been willing to sacrifice himself for others from the outset – as proven when he dived on what he thought was a live grenade in Captain America: The First Avenger. This demonstration of character proved Steve was the right man to become Captain America – and the same self-sacrificial traits make him a hero regardless of the super-soldier serum.

Avengers: Endgame was the perfect conclusion to the Infinity Saga, in large part because it did justice to both Iron Man and Captain America. Their stories came to a dramatic but satisfying conclusion, with each unknowingly proving the other wrong. Tony Stark became the hero the universe needed, the one who would offer his life for the sake of others, who would do what Steve Rogers never thought he would. And when he wielded Mjolnir, Captain America proved he was far more than just a lab rat; that the worthiness of his character meant he stood head and shoulders above his peers, to the extent he could use Mjolnir in battle. It was the perfect way to bring the story of the Avengers to a close.
