Ernie Hudson Defends Ghostbusters Reboot; Praises Cast & Script

Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot is a curious film. Despite having the most-disliked trailer ever on YouTube, it also recently topped a list of the most anticipated comedies of the summer, but one person who seems to love it is original Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson. Having made a cameo appearance in the film and seen the script, he believes that a lot of naysayers will change their tune once the movie has actually been released.

Calling in to the Tony Tone Show on Vintage Sound 93.1 in Muscatine, IA, Hudson talked a lot about his experiences with fans of the original Ghostbusters and other films he’s worked on. The conversation shifted to some of his current work, and ended with a brief discussion of the Ghostbusters reboot. When asked for his thoughts on the new film and the reaction its trailer received online, Hudson replied:

“We all do a cameo in the movie, me, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts. It’s a great script, the girls are really funny, they have a great camaraderie, a chemistry that I think is going to come through on screen. And I think a lot of the criticism will go away once they see the movie, because I think the movie is going to be pretty extraordinary.”

While some of the cameos in the film have been revealed, there’s still a lot about the new movie that isn’t known. The film’s trailer has been panned by various groups on the Internet, but the movie’s marketing doesn’t seem phased by the negative push against it. Character posters, an April Fool’s gag that included a reference to the original film as well as other marketing materials show that the push to play up the film isn’t slowing down in the slightest.

In all honesty, there’s a decent chance that Hudson is right – at least in part. Once Ghostbusters is released, some of the criticism will likely die down because we’ll have more than just a few minutes of screen time to judge the movie on. It looks like it will definitely have a different feel than the original, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. That may not mean a lot, however, since even fairly worthy remakes tend to fare poorly against nostalgia.

Of course, some might suggest that Hudson and others associated with the original film have an incentive for the new film to do well; after all, if the new Ghostbusters underperforms then it could reflect poorly on their willingness to make cameos. It’s not often that you see actors talking down about movies they’ve recently starred in, after all, especially before the movie comes out. It’s possible that Hudson is playing to the marketing here, though it’s also possible that he genuinely likes the new film. Either way, fans won’t know for sure for a couple more months.
