MCU’s Eternals introduces a new and powerful race of cosmic beings who have inhabited Earth for thousands of years. Although they have avoided interfering in human conflict, they must reunite when the Deviants have reemerged. Directed by Chloé Zhao, the film takes on a different style of its storytelling while showcasing beautiful visuals that capture the strength and power of the newest team.

Zhao’s superhero film heavily dives into the Eternals’ origin story, and it is a lot to process for even a two-hour and 37-minute movie. However, the film ends with more questions than answers regarding the direction of the team’s advancing story and the MCU.

Is Ikaris Really Dead?

As one of the most powerful Eternals, Ikaris was one of the few members with a well-developed character arc. He was steadfast about fulfilling the Emergence, even if it meant a monumental apocalypse ending human existence. Ikaris betrayed Ajak and the team, knowing they would defy Arishem’s orders.

Sersi and the remaining Eternals fought hard enough to foil the plans, and feeling guilty of his actions, Ikaris flew towards the sun – much like his mythological counterpart. Although it is speculated that he is dead, the MCU might have more plans for him. Therefore, people would have to keep their eyes open to see if he somehow returns.

So, Is Thena Suddenly Cured?

Thena was diagnosed with an illness called Mahd Wy’ry, in which Eternal starts to lose their memories due to their immortality, and it causes impulsive behavior. As stated by Ajak, it was a serious and incurable disease.

For Thena, these episodes usually occurred when they confronted a Deviant. Her episode appeared at the end of the film, in which she eventually overcame the effects after killing Kros. However, considering Thena joined Druid and Makkari to inform other Eternals about the truth, the film never addressed if she was cured of the disease. It seems sudden, without any clear explanation, and if she still has it, then it could be critical when she steps foot on other planets with Deviants – which is her triggering point.

Why Has No One Else In The MCU Acknowledged The Near Cataclysmic Event?

Much of the plot revolved around stopping a doomsday event called the Emergence from destroying Earth. Considering Earth is inhabited by wizards, aliens, and droids, it seems baffling that no one else stepped forward during the near-apocalyptic event.

Furthermore, Earth is under the protection of characters like Doctor Strange, so it is even more confusing why he was not around to help. Although the Eternals stopped it by killing the Celestial Tiamut, Earth was a mere moment from destruction. Nevertheless, it will be curious how familiar characters will discuss and react to this event.

How Will Arishem Conduct His Judgment?

Many comic book fans know that the Celestial, Arishem, created the Eternals. With his plans foiled, Arishem has presently spared planet Earth to conduct further judgment and even took Kingo, Phastos, and Sersi hostage to decide whether they can live.

Of course, the biggest question is how he plans to do that and with what criteria. Currently, the MCU is on the verge of the multiverse path, so it brings questions regarding how these consequences will fit in and set up future plots in the MCU. Furthermore, when can viewers expect to see Arishem again?

When Will Dane Whitman Suit Up As Black Knight?

Despite the hype around Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, AKA Black Knight, he has yet to debut as his alter ego. Furthermore, Dane Whitman only had a few scenes in the film, acting almost as a cameo.

Although it is disappointing that he had limited action, the film did tease his persona as Black Knight in the post-credit scene. After learning about a hidden family secret, he inherited a chest that contained the Ebony Blade. He was moments away from touching it before being disturbed by an off-screen voice. Although fans have yet to see Harington in his armor as Black Knight, it will be exciting when the day does come and it could drastically change the course of the MCU.

What Does The Off-Screen Voice Hint About The Direction Of The MCU?

In the same post-credit scene, viewers heard an off-screen voice that distracted Dane from having a crucial moment with the blade. It was unclear who the person was until Zhao confirmed it was actor Mahershala Ali.

This incredible moment marks Ali’s debut in the MCU. It was confirmed at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con that Marvel Studios was working on a Blade film, with Ali playing the titular character. However, there is little information about the development and the expected release date. While it is exciting to hear Ali as Blade, it also leaves some questions about the direction of the MCU and how the character will fit in the current storyline?

How Will The Introduction Of Starfox Change The MCU?

In perhaps one of the best character introductions, Harry Styles made his surprising debut as Starfox, Thanos’ brother. His introduction only shows that a lot will unfold in Phase Four.

Although it appears that Starfox will be with the remaining Eternals for now, he could have a significant presence in the MCU. Even though the multiverse storyline is central in the MCU, his appearance will likely set the cosmic events beyond Earth. Although it is unknown what the exact direction is, it will be exciting to see what else is yet to come.

How Will The Remaining Eternals & Starfox Save Sersi & Others?

The movie ends with each half of the team going their separate ways, with Kingo, Phastos, and Sersi remaining on Earth – only to be taken by Arishem. However, Thena, Druid, and Marraki were spared.

Starfox informed them about their capture and seemingly wanted to help rescue them. With the orb as their only way to locate them, the mid-credit scene does step up the course of the Eternals’ future storyline. How will they succeed in their rescue mission, and what other threats will they encounter along the way? It also leaves questions about Starfox’s plans and why he wants to help them.

Will Many More Eternals Join Them In The MCU?

Even though the film introduced ten Eternals, they are not the only ones. As mentioned in the movie, many other Eternals have the same mission of the Emergence. Of course, the Eternals on Earth learned the truth and wanted to share the knowledge with others.

Given the recent events, the Eternals had to change their plans for now. Regardless, more Eternals will likely be introduced in the MCU, but it is unclear when and what their appearance would contribute to Phase Four or even Phase Five.

Will There Be A Sequel?

It is the million-dollar question, and right now, things seem questionable about the potential for a sequel. Eternals is the lowest-ranked MCU movie on Rotten Tomatoes, with an abysmal 49%. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the audience scores are much more favorable.

Nevertheless, Eternals is the most contrasting MCU film, as it sways from the usual formula. Although it was a risky move and fans still appreciate the newest film, it is uncertain if the mixed reviews will discourage Disney from going forward with a sequel, let alone with the current style. While fans will have to wait and see, the characters will at least return since the credits ended with “The Eternals will return.”
