Eternals 10 Things Only Comic Fans Know About Gilgamesh

The Eternals, a cosmically empowered society of ancient, alien-modified humans, are one of Marvel Comics’ more obscure properties. Nevertheless, they are set to make their big-screen debut in November 2021’s MCU Eternals film, and expectations are high. After their success adapting similar unknown comic book franchises, such as 2014’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, Marvel’s films have established a well-deserved reputation; streamlining their comic book properties and accentuating the elements that work best for mainstream audiences.

And yet, the inclusion of one particular Eternal amongst the cast of the upcoming film, Gilgamesh, played by Don Lee, seems completely left-field, even for MCU’s standards. Often forgotten, even in the comic book universe of his own people, Gilgamesh is a character that only long-term readers are most familiar with.

10 Mythical Hero

Like all Eternals, Gilgamesh is thousands of years old, part of an ancient offshoot of humanity charged with guiding and protecting the human race for the day in which the Celestials, the ancient, god-like beings who imbued them with their abilities, return to judge the Earth. Like most Eternals, Gilgamesh has inspired or been mistaken for other characters throughout antiquity. Unlike other Eternals, such as Ikaris and Sersi, Gilgamesh has borne the role of multiple ancient heroes. His actions in ancient Sumeria earned him his most frequent identity of Gilgamesh, but his adventures have also been misattributed to the Greek hero Hercules, the early Anglo legends of Beowulf, and the Hebrew stories of the strong man Samson.

9 Forgotten

Due to Gilgamesh’s frequent meddling and showboating amidst ancient humans, Zuras, leader of the Eternals, banished him, confining the hero to a sequestered region of the Eternal city, Olympia, and striking all reference of him from their records. For centuries, rumors of “The Forgotten One” abound throughout Eternal society, but few knew whether or not his existence was true. Finally, during a harrowing, must-read ordeal involving the Celestials and the Eternals’ sworn enemies, the Deviants, the Eternal Sprite released Gilgamesh in a desperate last-ditch effort. Gilgamesh turned the tide of battle, rescuing his brethren and reclaiming his place amongst their society. Following this adventure, Zuras would begin referring to Gilgamesh as “Hero” but this identity was short-lived.

8 Real Name Unknown

Despite his intersections with ancient humans having earned him the accolades historically attributed to the mythical heroes Gilgamesh, Hercules, Beowolf, Samson, and others, the Eternal who most often refers to himself as Gilgamesh has yet to reveal his true identity. While he was exiled from the rest of his brethren, he was only referred to as “The Forgotten One,” and after being reassimilated amongst their ranks, he was only called “Hero.” While he has never revealed his original identity, the name Gilgamesh has been his most used, and the only alias of his to-date that has no other established Marvel character attached.

7 Blindness

After the adventure which redeemed “The Forgotten One” and returned him to prominence amongst the ranks of his Eternal brethren, Gilgamesh, despite his demi-god-like healing abilities, found himself stricken with an as-yet unexplained bout of blindness. Despite this setback, Gilgamesh proved himself never shy of battle, and channeled his ancient powers into his remaining four senses, developing a radar sense akin to that of the hero Daredevil. While this affliction was temporary, Gilgamesh’s fighting prowess, even while blinded, further established him as one of the greatest warriors amongst the ranks of his people.

6 Avenger

During the events of 1988’s X-Men event, Inferno, Gilgamesh was one of the few non-mutant heroes to become involved against Earth’s demonic invasion. After rescuing Franklin Richards, son of The Fantastic Four’s Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman, Gilgamesh would be offered official Avengers membership.

One of only three Eternals to have ever served amongst the ranks of Earth’s mightiest heroes, Gilgamesh was inducted into the Avengers’ ranks just shortly before his Eternal ally, Sersi, although his tenure would prove to be much shorter-lived in comparison.

5 Mind-Wiped

In writer Neil Gaiman’s critically acclaimed run on Eternals vol. 3, the entire race of secret immortals found themselves living various human existences, with no memory of their godly pasts. Gilgamesh, during this event, was reborn as a Brazilian circus performer called “O Guerreiro,” which is Portuguese for “The Warrior.” When his memory was restored, the always confrontational Gilgamesh displayed an immediately assumed distrust for the other Eternals around him, resulting in a misunderstanding instigated battle with Makkari, the fastest of their fellowship. His memories were returned upon the arrival of the Eternal warrior Thena, right before he was subsequently slain by her.

4 Suspected Traitor

Depicted in a major storyline featured in 2006’s Eternals vol. 4, which brought the ancient demi-gods into the orbit of the larger Marvel Universe once again, the Mad Titan, Thanos set about systematically eliminating members of the species, one by one. As the Eternals began to suspect a traitor amongst their ranks, Gilgamesh was singled out by deduction.

Despite his more recent notoriety and prominence within their ranks, Gilgamesh’s time spent isolated from their greater community, lead greatly to this distrust. In actuality, the brilliant Eternal Phastos was eventually revealed to be the traitor, who had discovered a dark truth about his species’ frequent-resurrections that he sought to disable.

3 Hercules’ Roommate

2015/16’s Hercules vol. 4 brought the ancient Olympian and former Avenger back to Marvel Comics prominence, following the universe-changing Secret Wars event. This reestablishment of the classic hero mixed classic high adventure with a 90’s sit-com bent, complete with a hilarious supporting cast. Now heavily hinted at to be within the throes of an existential crisis, Gilgamesh was reintroduced as Hercules’ disenchanted flatmate, often referred to simply as “Gil.”

While bunking with Hercules, Gilgamesh frequently spent his days drinking himself into a stupor and consuming endless amounts of earthly entertainment, via Hercules’ living room television. Despite the Olympian’s herculean efforts to free his friend from this rut, it would take another cataclysmic event, and the formation of a team of godly heroes to entirely reinspire Gilgamesh’s prior always war-ready persona.

2 Gods Of War

During Marvel’s Civil War II event, the hero Hercules faced an uphill battle against a group known as The Uprising Storm, a new age collective of self-styled “Modern Gods” whose overarching goals included the complete elimination of the gods of the old worlds. To combat this new and esoteric threat, Hercules assembled a team of ancient godly warriors, breaking Gilgamesh from his increasingly mundane existence as the group’s first recruit. Other members to join their ranks included the Asgardians Sigurd and Lorelei, famed Greek maze-runner Theseus, and the actual Beowulf, whose identity Gilgamesh had usurped previously, years before their meeting as teammates during this event.

1 Strongest Of The Eternals

Due to the modifications that the ancient, dangerous, god-like alien Celestials introduced into their gene pool, each of the Eternals possesses the ability to harness and manipulate cosmic energies, with different effects depending upon their specific disciplines. Gilgamesh has traditionally harnessed this energy into increasing his own overall strength, stamina, and durability, and is often considered to be the physically strongest of The Eternals.

Supplemented by his years of experience in battle, and mastery of countless ancient combat techniques, Gilgamesh is also considered the greatest warrior amongst the Eternals ancient lineage. He has gone toe-to-toe in battles against some of Marvel’s most notoriously powerful fighters, including Thor and Hercules, and held his ground. While others of his lineage have adapted the use of their abilities to better fit in as human societies have changed around them, Gilgamesh has always prided himself for past war-time and combat victories, always finding his often forgotten element at the cusp of each new battle.
