Eternals 10 Things Only Comic Fans Know About Ikaris

The Eternals is one of the more obscure comic book properties to be given the silver screen treatment in the MCU. Despite being relatively unknown to most, however, they have a long and complicated history in the Marvel Comics Universe.

Created by the legendary Jack Kirby, Ikaris, who will be portrayed by actor Richard Madden, has often been portrayed as the face of The Eternals and is often the most easily recognizable member of their ranks to casual fans. Still, there are many things about Ikaris that only long-term comics readers know.

10 He Debuted In The First Issue

After leaving Marvel Comics in 1970, legendary comic book creator Jack Kirby took his talents to the distinguished competition, DC Comics. While working for DC, Kirby created the epic cosmic Fourth World saga, introducing such enduring characters as Mister Miracle and Darkseid. In 1975, unhappy with editorial interference upon his creativity, Kirby left DC and returned to Marvel, where he brought many of the sprawling cosmic thematic elements from his Fourth World comics and repurposed them to create The Eternals. Standing tall amongst the ranks of the many Eternals introduced in the series’ very first issue, Eternals #1 (1976), was Ikaris, who has gone on to play a prominent role in every iteration of the franchise since.

9 He Guided “Noah’s Ark”

Like the other Eternals, Ikaris has lived for thousands of years, guiding the human race. At one point in antiquity, there was an event known as “The Great Cataclysm,” which resulted in the sinking of the continent of Atlantis, as well as much of the world flooding. To save some of the humans and animals from the devastation, the Eternal Utnapishtim built an enormous ark, which Ikaris flew ahead of for guidance. A recurring element in Eternals comics is the idea that, throughout their intertwining history with early humans, the ancient beings eventually inspired many mythological characters and events; this being an obvious parallel to the biblical tale of Noah’s Ark.

8 He Had A Wife And Son

Unlike many of his fellow Eternals, Ikaris has always had an affinity towards mankind. This fascination has led to him often attempting to assimilate into human societies throughout history. One such occasion occurred in the days of Greek mythology and resulted in Ikaris meeting and falling in love with a mortal woman in Minoan Crete. The pair eventually had a son, and with his family, the immortal Ikaris finally felt a sense of the humanity he longed for. This was fleeting, however, as his duties protecting humans from monsters and Deviants would force Ikaris to be away frequently, and he would return from one fateful adventure away to find that his son had died in a tragic accident.

7 His Real Name Is Unrevealed

Despite having been known as Ikaris since his first appearance, this is not the Eternal’s original moniker. Instead, “Ikaris” was actually the name of his son, thousands of years ago. The younger Ikaris longed to fly like his father and finally received his wish when the Eternals Phastos and Makkari helped to build an artificial flying apparatus for him.

When the elder Ikaris’ duties kept him away for a number of years on one occasion, the young Ikaris decided to use his flying device to search for him. Unfortunately, after flying too high into the atmosphere, he lost consciousness and eventually plummeted into the ocean, akin to the fate of the mythological Icarus. Distraught after the loss of his son, Ikaris took his name in honor. To date, his original name has never been revealed.

6 His Frequent Alias Is Ike Harris

In the modern era, when attempting to infiltrate or assimilate amongst the human race, Ikaris has frequently used the creative alias of “Ike Harris.” First used when posing as a cameraman in order to accompany an archeological expedition threatening to reveal a secret Eternal artifact, Ikaris would adopt this identity as his frequent alter-ego. He would modify this name into “Iceberg Ike” while wrestling for the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation, a professional wrestling league featuring superpowered competitors, such as The Fantastic Four’s Ben Grimm, aka The Thing. In recent times, Ikaris used the name Ike Harris during a period in which he truly believed himself to be a human, following the entire pantheon of Eternals being Eternals being mind-wiped by one of their own members.

5 He’s Fought Apocalypse

The immortal mutant Apocalypse and the Eternal Ikaris are both ancient and powerful beings with ties to the cosmic, god-like Celestials. It was inevitable then, that their paths would eventually cross. In fact, Ikaris has fought Apocalypse on multiple occasions at various points throughout history, as their objectives have often come into conflict.

The incredibly powerful Apocalypse has frequently been one of the X-Men’s most dangerous foes, often capably defeating the entire team single-handedly, but Ikaris has proven more than capable of holding his own against the villain.

4 He’s Fought Thanos

Casual fans may not know that the Mad Titan, Thanos, is himself an Eternal. While often used to specifically refer to the earth-based group, “Eternals” is a broad term that encompasses all species who were genetically enhanced early in their development by the intervention of the cosmic Celestials.

Thanos is a descendant of the Celestials’ interference in the progression of a race of humanoid beings who inhabited Titan, one of the moons of Saturn. Despite this shared lineage, Ikaris and Thanos have only come into conflict on a couple of occasions, and in contrast to his battles with Apocalypse, Ikaris, despite all of his power, has struggled against the might of the Titan.

3 His Heroic Team-Ups

As the Eternal most interested in building relations with humanity, the current heroic age has allowed Ikaris many opportunities to operate openly without obstructing the objectives of his otherwise ensconced aggregation. His frequent forays into the intertwined worlds of Marvel’s heroes have led to Ikaris teaming up with many super-powered individuals, and significantly more often than most of his brethren. He’s fought alongside Iron Man on more than one occasion, exchanged philosophies with Doctor Strange, and assembled alongside Captain America, Thor, and Hawkeye’s West Coast Avengers on a particularly memorable adventure, showcased in Eternals, vol. 2 #12 (1986).

2 He’s The Prime Eternal

When the Zuras, leader of The Eternals, died, Ikaris’ role as “Prime Eternal” was quickly usurped by his daughter, Thena, much to the dismay of Ikaris. Having lived and battled alongside Thena for thousands of years, Ikaris deemed her an unfit, brash, and impulsive leader. This friction between two of the group’s most powerful members would lead to constant internal conflict amongst the ranks of the Eternals and frequent altercations between the two. Eventually, Ikaris would challenge Thena in the Hall of Eternal Judgement, where he defeated her to become the new Prime Eternal, a role he has ostensibly carried ever since, even through multiple deaths and resurrections.

1 He’s One Of The Most Powerful Eternals

Due to the Celestials’ genetic tampering of their lineage, all Eternals possess the inherent ability to store and manipulate cosmic energies to varying degrees and effects. Ikaris has been described as the most powerful of the earth-based Eternals, second only to their (often deceased) leader Zuras. After honing his abilities for thousands of years, Ikaris has mastered the ability to manipulate massive amounts of cosmic energy, granting him superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and durability, as well as flight and the ability to regenerate from even the most severe wounds. His most recognizable ability, however, is his iconic heat vision, which is often referred to as his “disintegration beams” due to their ability to vaporize solid objects.
