Eternals Celestial Tiamut Revealed To Be 300 Miles Tall

The VFX supervisor on Eternals recently revealed the Celestial Tiamut is 300 miles tall. Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals saw the Celestials take on a more prominent role in the MCU after their minor introduction in Guardians of The Galaxy in 2014. While their appearances have been referenced in other Marvel properties, including by Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it wasn’t until the Eternals that audeicnes were introduced to the potential chaos these celestial beings could cause in the MCU.

With an all-star cast featuring Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Don Lee, Barry Keoghan, Lia McHugh, Laura Ridloff, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie, Eternals established the cosmic mythos around the creation of the MCU proper. Among the Celestials stands Arishem the Judge, who created stars, planets, and life forms. Within a planet, a new celestial would incubate, feeding off the life force created by the planet’s inhabitants. Arishem used the Eternals to protect these inhabitants from the Deviants, another race of beings bent on destroying the planet. During the events of Eternals, Chan’s Sersi is chosen to gather her fellow Eternals to stop the emergence of a new Celestial, Tiamut, from destroying the Earth.

Now in a recent interview with Comicbook.com, VFX supervisor Matt Aiken reveals that the challenge for his special effects team was creating the massive scale of Tiamut, the celestial who tries to emerge from within the Earth. Given their massive size, visually scaling a Celestial that is both a monstrous figure and a force strong enough to require the Eternal’s involvement is no small feat. Aiken discusses how the Celestial needed to be large, but also playable to the visuals of the scene, making the behemoth roughly 300 miles tall. Check out the full quote below:

And the big thing that came to bear for us was about [Tiamut’s] immense scale. It’s a hundred kilometers from his hand to his head. I think it’s 500 kilometers, about 300 miles, from his head to his toes, so he’s pretty big…and it’s just we had to really find a language around that scale that helped explain that he was huge and big.

The Celestials have always been larger-than-life beings, even from their comic book origins alongside the Eternals by creator Jack Kirby. First appearing in Eternals #2 in 1976, the Celestials were described by Kirby as ancient beings who experimented with creating life through early human-like creatures. These experiments resulted in the creation of the Eternals and the Deviants. And while Kirby never was afforded the opportunity to see his vision on the silver screen, Kirby’s legacy in Eternals has surpassed the pages of comics to influence future storylines of the MCU.

The movie has only been in theaters since November, but the Eternals’ recently crossed $330 million at the box office, putting it on track to possibly become the most successful MCU release during the pandemic. Now that Eternals has left a cosmic impact on the future of the MCU, introducing fans to Eros, the brother of Thanos, played by Harry Styles, it’s possible the VFX team at Marvel has other massive threats on the horizon. And with Eternals leaving fans with plenty of unanswered questions, it’s only a matter of time before we see the Celestials return to wreak havoc on the Eternals and possibly the greater MCU.
