Chloé Zhao, director of Marvel’s Eternals, celebrates the release of the latest MCU film in an emotional post to her Instagram. Eternals tells the story of an immortal race of heroes known as Eternals who have been secretly living on Earth for thousands of years. When an evil force known as Deviants threatens Earth’s peaceful existence, the Eternals must come out hiding and band together to defeat them.

From the release of the very first trailer, Eternals promised to be a slightly different kind of movie than Marvel fans were used to. To tackle the ambitious scope of the film and capture the story’s more ethereal energy, Marvel tapped Chloé Zhao, an indie filmmaker best known for her Academy Award-winning film Nomadland, to direct. Although the film has not yet been officially released worldwide, Eternals has already been generating headlines for its current position as the worst-reviewed MCU film ever on Rotten Tomatoes.

In an emotional post to her Instagram, Chloé Zhao celebrates the release of her new film and says she is “eternally grateful” to Marvel as well as the cast and crew for making it all possible. Featuring a creative piece of fan art, Zhao’s caption refers to the film as her “love child,” and she also praises the Marvel fans around the world who are anxiously awaiting the film’s official release. While critics’ reviews have been greatly mixed thus far, it’s clear that Zhao and the others involved in the making of the film still have great affection for the project. As has been proven with many films in the past, the critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes can occasionally be completely different than the audience score. It’s entirely possible that, upon the film’s release, general audiences will find the film much more enjoyable than critics do.

Regardless of how Eternals goes down with audiences when it releases, Zhao has made clear that she believes in the film and is proud of it. Ultimately, Eternals seems to represent an interesting departure from the typical kind of Marvel movie and features an array of under-represented characters, including Marvel’s first deaf superhero and an LGBTQ+ superhero. Even though Eternals is unlikely to receive the same level of critical and audience acclaim as something like Avengers: Endgame, Zhao, as a filmmaker, marks an interesting choice to direct an MCU film and is hopefully indicative of the diverse and out-of-the-box-style directors that will helm future Marvel projects. Eternals releases in North America on November 5th.
