Upon its release in November 2021, Eternals garnered a divisive reaction among fans and critics alike, something that director and co-writer Chloé Zhao was expecting.

“Eternals was planned to be released soon after [Avengers:] Endgame, and not at a time when everyone is having an existential crisis,” she told Empire, referring to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “The film itself is about existential crisis, both for humanity and God. So I think we definitely felt it was coming.”

Zhao also said that she knew the official reviews would be mixed upon the film’s release but argued that “the need for consensus is a hindrance for any authentic creative process. Just like it’s a hindrance for living an authentic life as a person. I have been on the receiving end of somewhat consensus, and divisiveness about my work. Neither of them has any real influence on me as an artist, because every time I’m lucky enough to create, I learn from the process. From what I’ve succeeded [at], and what I’ve failed [at]. But that learning process is a very intimate affair. Anything beyond that, for me, it’s just a part of the ecosystem that exists because of the nature of the industry we’re in. Like a flower or a rock, I acknowledge and appreciate their presence. But that’s as far as it goes.”

Eternals currently holds a 47% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the lowest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film on the site according to critics—below Thor: The Dark World (66%), The Incredible Hulk (67%) and Iron Man 2 (72%). However, Rotten Tomatoes binary ranking of “Fresh” and “Rotten” does not allow the system to fully account for more mediocre reviews, something it has been criticized for in the past. The film holds a 78% audience score on the site.

On Metacritic, Eternals has a Metascore of 52, while its user score stands at a 6.3. Meanwhile, the film’s IMDb ranking, based off 274,000 user reviews is a 6.4/10. The movie also sparked a vigorous debate on Twitter upon its release regarding its diversity, sex scene and pacing, among other topics.

In terms of box office, the movie grossed $402 million worldwide, putting it ahead of Black Widow, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk. While this is double the $200 million Marvel spent on the film, that figure does not include marketing materials. However, the box office gross does not include merchandising, digital sales and the value of Disney+ viewership.
