Eternals One Quote From Each Character That Goes Against Their Personality

CONTENT WARNING: Major spoilers for Marvel’s Eternals are discussed in this article.

Marvel is once again dipping into the cosmic side of their universe in Eternals, an eons-long journey in scope and the making, boasting plenty of new characters for MCU fans to sink their teeth into. Each of the new immortal beings is given a distinct and separate personality from their compatriots, making each character stand out among the larger team.

There are moments throughout the film, however, wherein certain characters behave strikingly out-of-character based on what the movie had set up previously. These moments are encapsulated in brief lines of dialogue, which represent the character’s larger lapse in reliability.

Phastos

“They’re Not Worth Saving.”

Eternals One Quote From Each Character That Goes Against Their Personality

Phastos is a kindhearted and caring Eternal, and one of the few to start a family among humankind after the group fractured. With the exception of Sersi, he seems to be the one most deeply ingratiated into human society, which makes his line about humanity not being worth saving seem odd by comparison.

This line comes at one of Phastos’s lowest moments, as he laments the usage of his technology to take tens of thousands of lives at Hiroshima. Despite it being the only time that Phastos seems to turn against humanity, it shows just how much his worldview has changed in the time since, with him finding a family he thinks is “worth saving.”

Kro

“It’ll Be Okay. Give Me Your Hand.”

Kro is the evolved leader of the Deviants, a group of genetically manufactured abominations, who battles against the Eternals alongside Ikaris in the final act of the film. He longs to kill as many humans as possible, regardless of the wishes of the Eternals or the Celestials.

When he battles Thena, Kro delves into Gilgamesh’s memories, which he absorbed after killing him. For a moment, he actually sounds like Gilgamesh, speaking comforting words to the pained Thena. However, this was merely a ploy, meant to trick the Eternal into letting down her guard.

Kingo

“Even With My Help, We’re No Match. It’s Ikaris.”

Eternals One Quote From Each Character That Goes Against Their Personality

Kingo is one of the wildest and most fun of the group of Eternals sent to Earth. After the group split, he works to become a multi-generational Bollywood star. Throughout most of the film, Kingo cracks jokes and delivers witty remarks about his compatriots, usually keeping things light even in the face of danger.

It is Kingo’s typical levity that makes his somber moments all the more powerful and surprising. While he is usually upbeat and self-assured, when he tells Makkari that the rest of the group is no match for Ikaris, he is truly defeated, to the point where all jokes and braggadocious remarks are left behind.

Druig

“I Can’t Do This. This Is Your Fight Now.”

Druig is one of the members of the team that seems the hardest to get along with. He is strong-willed and confrontational, often getting on the other Eternals’ bad side. He does, however, show a deep love for humanity, choosing to walk away from his family in order to save the lives of the citizens of Tenochtitlan.

Druig’s personality often results in him acting out on his own without much regard for the input of others. He rarely stops to hear other people’s plans out but does take the time to pass the baton on to Sersi, putting his faith in someone else’s abilities for once.

Sprite

“Can We Go Now? It’s Past My Bedtime.”

Sprite may look like the youngest member of the group, but in reality, she is just as old as any of them. She has been tortured throughout the millennia by the fact that she will forever look like a human child. Because of this, unlike the other Eternals, she can never settle down and have a family.

Typically, Sprite does not play into the jokes at her own expense, often retaliating when another character alludes to how young she looks. Only when trying to convince Sersi and Dane to walk her home does she ever use her young looks to her advantage.

Sersi

“If We’d Protected Humanity From Everything For 7,000 Years, You Never Would Have Had The Chance to Develop The Way You Were Meant To.”

After Ajak’s untimely death, Sersi becomes the new leader of the Earthbound Eternals, leading them to defy the will of the Celestials and save humanity from certain destruction. She is one of the bravest Eternals, and truly cares for the inhabitants of Earth, even if it means turning against everything she ever knew.

When asked why she and the other Eternals didn’t meddle in the affairs of humans, Sersi regurgitates a textbook response about human development that she clearly never really believed in. Based on her actions later in the film, it is obvious that Sersi doesn’t always agree with the Celestials, especially when it comes to humanity. This answer was simply easier for her than admitting the flaw in Arishem’s design.

Thena

“It’s Too Late. Everyone Is Going To Die.”

Eternals One Quote From Each Character That Goes Against Their Personality

Thena is the strong warrior Eternal whom the mythological Greek goddess Athena was based on, according to MCU canon. She is one of the fiercest fighters on the team, engaging in some of the best fight scenes in Eternals.

Despite her battle prowess, Thena is also quite loving to her fellow Eternals, making it surprising when he declares that “everyone is going to die” before attacking them with her cosmic sword. This lapse in character is later explained as a side effect of Mahd W’yry, a condition that sets in when an Eternal’s memories begin to collapse in on themselves.

Gilgamesh

Thena: “Gilgamesh Asked Druig To Put Me To Sleep Once.”

Gilgamesh: “So I Could Take A Trip To Fiji.”

Eternals One Quote From Each Character That Goes Against Their Personality

Gilgamesh is Thena’s caretaker after her case of Mahd W’yry begins to sink in, living with her in the wilderness of Australia where she cannot hurt anyone. He regularly puts his family above himself, especially when Thena is involved.

It is unusual to imagine Gilgamesh doing something as selfish as having Thena put to sleep in order to go on vacation, especially when compared to all the other selfless acts he commits over the course of the film. It is especially odd considering the fact that he eventually gives his life for Thena, the ultimate act of selflessness.

Ikaris

“I’m Not Who You Think I Am.”

Eternals One Quote From Each Character That Goes Against Their Personality

Ikaris is the most powerful of the Eternals sent to Earth, and the one most devoted to Arishem. Willing to do anything for the Celestials, Ikaris is mighty and self-confident, rarely letting any foe get the better of him, but his confidence often proves to be his downfall.

When Kingo pledges his loyalty to Ikaris, the Eternal has a brief moment of self-doubt, something extremely unusual for him. Just for a moment, it seems as though he actually regrets what he did to Ajak, though he quickly doubles down on his actions in later scenes.

Ajak

“The Cost Of Arishem’s Design–It’s Not Worth It. Not This Time.”

Ajak is the leader of the group of Eternals sent to Earth to prepare for the Emergence. A devoted and loyal follower of the Celestial Arishem the Judge, she has helped him destroy countless worlds to bring about new life over many eons. Everything her character does is to further the Celestial’s goals.

Despite her devotion to the Arishem, Ajak changes over the course of her mission to earth, eventually coming to the conclusion that destroying humanity in order to birth the Celestial Tiamut is not worth the trade. This moment perfectly defies who she once was and gives audiences a brief glimpse at who she had become in her time among humans.
