Euphoria Proved Ashtray Was the Smartest Yet Most Ignorant Character

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Euphoria Season 2, Episode 8, “All My Life, My Heart Has Yearned For A Thing I Cannot Name,” now streaming on HBO Max.

In the first two seasons of Euphoria, Javon Walton’s pint-sized Ashtray took crap from no one, acting as muscle to his older “brother” Fez when they dealt drugs to Rue and other teens. It felt comical at first, seeing someone so small with so much attitude, but Ashtray quickly intimidated folks and became a fan-favorite with his fighting skills.

It culminated in him killing Mouse, which brought the cops to their home in the finale. And it’s here Ash reminded everyone that while he was the show’s smartest character, he was also its most ignorant.

Now, calling Ash trigger happy would be an understatement. Fez has often tried to calm the tempestuous kid, but he’s like their comatose granny back in her day — hit first, ask questions later. It scared Fez, especially when Ash battered Cal with a shotgun and came close to killing him, just for snooping around the premises for his sex tape.

But that’s part of what makes Ash so alluring — he’s a brilliant strategist with a sixth sense. Sure, he’s trigger happy, but that was needed when Mouse was about to kill Fez. He was super-intuitive, sniffing out when haters crept around, while sussing out characters like Rue, Faye and other gangsters like Laurie who could be problematic. Fez didn’t always listen to him, and that made Ash angrier — he wasn’t just the brawn, he was the brains, too.

However, Ash’s ego and rage often boiled over, which is what ruined him. Word of Mouse’s murder got out, so the cops raided. However, they found Custer with his throat slit, once more due to Ash’s suspicions being proven right that their customer was wiretapped. Sadly, this provided evidence the SWAT team needed to take the duo down. What made it worse was rather than listen to Fez and flee, leaving Fez to take the blame, Ash locked himself in the bathroom and began firing on the officers.

It was heartbreaking seeing Fez on the ground yelling for him to stop, but one couldn’t help think Ash was acting senselessly. By shooting blindly, he hit Fez, and all this crossfire could have gotten his granny killed in her bed in the next room. When the police broke in and found him on the ground, he proved to be genius once more, playing dead only to pump a shotgun blast into one of the officers.

But all this selfish stunt did was paint the home as an offensive threat and cause a sniper to shoot him in the head. Thus, it’s hard to see Fez getting out of jail after his arrest due to Ash making things so much worse. This violent, reckless behavior risked his tribe’s lives repeatedly, and now Fez faces prison, not to mention his happy ending with Lexi got shot to hell. And to top if off, a green-lit Season 3 may have their granny in a hospital dying alone.

Both seasons of Euphoria are available on HBO and HBO Max.
