HBO Max has released a new trailer for Euphoria season 2 that centers around Rue’s relapse and introduction to selling drugs. The first season of Sam Levinson’s teen drama series premiered in 2019 to critical acclaim, with Zendaya being praised for her portrayal as the troubled main character.

After a few setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, HBO is finally gearing up to release the highly-anticipated sophomore season of Euphoria on January 9, with new episodes weekly. HBO aired two Euphoria specials last year that gave an inside look into Rue and Jules (portrayed by Hunter Schafer) in the aftermath of their breakup. The new season is sure to center around Rue’s relapse and attempts to move on from the relationship, with her high school friends dealing with their own problems in relationships and at home.

The latest Euphoria trailer from HBO gives the most insight yet into the events that will take place in season 2. Rue is seen back in 12-step meetings, but with a mysterious suitcase always in tow. It looks like she found a new friend, portrayed by musician/Euphoria newbie Dominic Fike, who gets her into the world of drug dealing. It leads to plenty of problems for Rue — from arguing with her mother to running from the police, with lots of guns and violence ominously threatened in between. There’s now an added crime element to the show, which is probably why Euphoria showrunners promise this season will be “brutal” for viewers.

Outside of Rue’s spiral following her split, we see a few glimpses of what the other Euphoria characters have been up to. Cassie (portrayed by Sydney Sweeney) appears to be dating Nate (portrayed by Jacob Elordi) — yes, the one who was in a toxic relationship with her BFF Maddy (portrayed by Alexa Demie). Meanwhile, Maddy is shown daydreaming about being pregnant, which could be foreshadowing as to what’s to come for her.

Euphoria season 2 has been years in the making, so fans have high expectations for the new episodes to live up to the beloved debut. It’s easy for a teen drama to get less believable as time goes on, with showrunners trying to find ways to introduce new plots that seamlessly blend into the heart of the story. But with the same cast and crew back for season 2, Euphoria is sure to be one of the first much-talked-about shows in 2022.
