To close out Phase 2, Marvel Studios brought Ant-Man to the big screen after years of developmental trouble. Outside of introducing Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Ant-Man also served as the debut of Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, the daughter of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). The movie stopped short of putting Hope in the The Wasp costume, settling instead for a teaser during the film’s end credits. When a sequel was announced, the title of Ant-Man and the Wasp made it clear Hope had been given co-lead status.

The Wasp’s popularity among filmmakers is evident as both Joss Whedon and onetime Ant-Man director Edgar Wright both had designs on using the character. Ultimately, neither got the chance, and it eventually fell on Peyton Reed to bring the character to life. And now that she’s established in the MCU, the character will be making appearances beyond her own movies.

In a recent interview with Blastr at NYCC, Lilly was asked about the future of Wasp and her larger role in the MCU. In her response, Lilly confirms she will be in the fourth Avengers film, but not Avengers: Infinity War, as apparently the producers wanted her in-costume reveal saved for the Ant-Man sequel.

“I’m excited because its essentially going to be, um, the origin of the Wasp. Of course, we’re going to see the Wasp for the first time take on the mantle, and put on the suit, and fly about, and do her thing. Following that one, there’s an Avengers series coming out, I believe its a two parter, and, um, the Wasp won’t be in the first part, she’ll be in the second part because they want to preserve that reveal for Ant-Man and the Wasp.”

It makes sense from a franchise perspective to allow the character to get her big moment in her own movie and not in a crossover film. This is something that doesn’t always work out in the great Marvel machine, as even though Lang made his first transformation to Giant-Man onscreen in Civil War, it was something that Peyton Reed had wanted to reveal in his movie first.

Wasp being confirmed for one of the next two Avengers films is hardly a shock, but it being specifically in the fourth film and not Infinity War, could point to that movie in particular being more Earth based than the first. After all, Infinity War could spend a lot of time with Thanos and him traveling across the galaxy collecting the Infinity Stones, so the final showdown will likely take place on Earth. Wasp is not someone who will be that effective in a space battle, but she would be of help on her home planet. Regardless of her role in the film, it will be exciting for viewers and fans of the character to see her standing (or flying) next to the rest of the Avengers and others.
