Even A Marvel GOD Can’t Imprison Black Panther

Warning: SPOILERS for Avengers #34

The god Khonshu has taken over the Earth of Marvel Comics and remade it in his image. In the current Avengers storyline, New York City has become a New Memphis, the seat of his empire, and his mummified foot soldiers have captured nearly every dissenting force in it, meaning superheroes. The god’s empire has captured Black Panther, lord of Wakanda, and have locked him in massive chains within their temple, where they work to force his power out of him. But in the new issue Avengers #34, T’challa has taught the god of night a hard lesson: the king of Wakanda will not be bowed, and will not be bound.

The conflict between Khonshu and Black Panther began last issue in Avengers #33. The Avengers don’t know it, but all the threats moving against them have one source: Mephisto, the most infamous devil in the Marvel Universe. Khonshu, Egyptian god of the moon and travelers in the night, enlisted his champion Moon Knight to steal the powers of the primordial Avengers. The street-level hero defeated one superhero after another to do it, from Iron Fist all the way to Thor, in order to empower Khonshu to kill Mephisto and save the world… with the necessary side effects of Khonshu ruling the world and everyone in it.

But Mephisto has survived death before, and in order to truly destroy him, Khonshu needs the missing primordial powers. The Phoenix of X-Men fame is missing, and the world-shattering Starbrand (who is also a newborn baby) is being hidden away by the remaining Avengers. That leaves Black Panther, who surrendered to Moon Knight to prevent an all-out siege on Wakanda… but who did not relinquish his power, because the superpowers of the Black Panther are inherent in T’challa’s blood and can never be stolen.

Avengers #34, by writer Jason Aaron and artist Javier Garron, shows us where T’challa ended up: chained to the floor, visited only by bird priests who come to beat him until he shows them a way to deliver his power to Khonshu. Every day more arrive–three, then five, then nine–and every day Black Panther remains defiant. He taunts them with the knowledge that their god does not “have the dignity to face him”, choosing instead to torture the Avenger with golden clubs and moonstone-tipped floggers. The god has chosen his most sacred and powerful materials to form the tools he uses against Black Panther, but none of them are enough.

When he gets a visit from Moon Knight, he implores the hero to stop Khonshu’s quest for power, but the white-and-gold-clad vigilante believes it is the only way to stop Mephisto from killing trillions of people. This convinces T’challa, if not that Khonshu is right, that there is no use in staying in Khonshu’s temple in the hopes of changing his or his champion’s mind. So Black Panther makes his move: he tells the priests to summon fifty more of their number, then shatters his bonds with a flex of his arms. In moments, he has the priesthood praying for mercy.

Now that the Black Panther is free, what comes next? The preview for September’s Avengers #36 has one sentence: “Moon Knight versus the Black Panther—for the fate of reality.” That won’t be an easy battle for either side. Moon Knight defeated four other Avengers who each have much more supernatural powers than Black Panther’s, and while he gave up most of their abilities, he retains the flames of the Ghost Rider. To equal that, Black Panther has all he needs: the strength in his blood and the weight of his crown.
