Even in Avengers Comics, Nobody Cares About Hawkeye

Hawkeye’s usefulness is a running joke in the MCU, but even in Marvel comics, the world thinks he’s the least important Avenger on the team.

Even in Avengers Comics Nobody Cares About Hawkeye

Warning: contains spoilers for W.E.B. of Spider-Man #5!

Out of all the Avengers, the one most ridiculed more than all others is undoubtedly Hawkeye. An expert archer, Clint Barton is often seen as a weak and forgettable member on a team full of gods like Thor, giant monsters like Hulk, super-soldiers like Captain America, and genius billionaire playboy philanthropists (Tony Stark). Unfortunately Hawkeye’s stigma of being left out of the popular crowd altogether occurs in the comics as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and in W.E.B. of Spider-Man #5, written by Kevin Shinick with art by Alberto Alburquerque and colors by Rachelle Rosenberg, every core Avenger receives a great honor – except Hawkeye.

In the W.E.B. of Spider-Man series, Peter Parker has been invited to the Worldwide Engineering Brigade: a think tank populated by other likeminded geniuses, including Harley Keener, Squirrel Girl, Moon Girl, and Onome. At the Paris branch, the gang meet Amadeus Cho but are attacked by a new Green Goblin: Mendel Stromm (who insists that the group call him the “Cy-Gob”). Peter and the W.E.B. gang pursue Cy-Gob to the Louvre Museum and ultimately defeat Stromm through judicious use of the mirrors on the Louvre’s famous pyramid entrance.

With the battle concluded, Peter and the gang meet the director of the Louvre, who isn’t too happy about the destroyed mirrors from the Louvre. The construction crew is assigned to replace them as they continue work on a new exhibit entitled the “Hall of Heroes”. On prominent display is a massive picture of the Avengers, in which Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, and Black Widow all strike a heroic pose. Unfortunately, the picture is missing Hawkeye entirely, and neither Peter nor anyone else present point out the omission.

Even in Avengers Comics Nobody Cares About Hawkeye

Hawkeye notably wasn’t included as a founding member of the group: in The Avengers #1 published in 1963, the Stan Lee-scripted story included Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp as the original team. Captain America had yet to be rescued from the ice, and Black Widow’s character had yet to be created (she wouldn’t debut until the following year. Clint would also appear in 1964 – and though Hawkeye was temporarily granted powers, he usually charges into battle with nothing but a bow and a quiver full of arrows. He since became a valued member of the team – but he admittedly has a difficult time battling massive, otherworldly threats with his limited arsenal.

Since the picture in W.E.B. of Spider-Man #5 omits Hawkeye, one wonders if the hero is as forgotten in the comics as he is among fan discourse concerning the MCU. Clint Barton does have a rich and somewhat tragic backstory that has yet to be explored in detail in the films. When it comes to the Avengers, it appears that in the 616 Marvel Universe, not even the Louvre cares about Hawkeye.
