Even Thanos Knows Galactus is The Stronger Villain

Thanos is one of the strongest villains in Marvel Comics. Even without the Infinity Gauntlet, The Mad Titan is a formidable opponent for most adversaries. Galactus is a being that is on an entirely different power level because he is a cosmic entity. To survive he must consume and convert the energy of worlds, thus he is on an endless quest to eat planets to satiate his appetite. While his motivations may seem selfish, his acts are a means of survival. Thanos, on the other hand, is the more stereotypical villain obsessed with power. But which of these notorious villains are more powerful? Fans can debate but Thanos gave a clear answer.

Thanos was hated from birth because of his mutation. He was born with the Deviant gene and his appearance was dramatically different from the other citizens of Titan, his homeworld. During his youth, Thanos found companionship in Mistress Death and became obsessed with the idea of courting and pleasing her. The Mad Titan began his crusade to kill as many as possible to impress his love. He successfully achieved his quest to become one of the most powerful beings in the universe by collecting all the Infinity Gems needed to power the Infinity Gauntlet. Using the Infinity Gauntlet he was once able to wipe out half of the universe’s lifeforms.

Galactus was born before the current universe. Originally, he was a space explorer named Galan who discovered that a radiation plague was close to destroying his planet. After the plague killed many of his planet’s occupants Galan and other citizens of the planet Taa charged straight into the radiation. Only Galan remained and found himself enhanced by the radiation. Before the Big Bang Galan was spared by the Phoenix Force to become part of the new universe. He emerged as Galactus, a being with energy so strong that he had to forge armor to suppress it. The massive Galactus found himself craving planets to survive, as he does in Thanos #2 by Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom.

In Thanos #2 Thanos is recruited by the Rigellians to assist them on one of their planets but isn’t told what they need help with. He arrives on the planet with Adam Warlock and a Rigellian leader to find the problem they wanted assistance with is that Galactus Devourer of Worlds is hovering over their planet. Thanos remarks that if he had the Infinity Gauntlet he could have made quick work of Galactus but without it, his abilities are “Lilliputian” to Galactus. This is a reference to Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Lilliput was an island where all the beings were tiny in comparison to the protagonist’s normal size.

In this case, the proud and powerful Thanos acknowledges that he is no match for the might of Galactus. This moment solidifies The Devourer of Worlds as one of Marvel’s strongest villains because of Thanos’s deference. The Mad Titan is one of the most feared villains in the universe yet he has to admit that he cannot compare to Galactus without the aid of the Infinity Gauntlet. Galactus is a truly terrifying opponent.
