WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Peacemaker Episode 2, “Best Friend, For Never,” and Episode 3, “Better Goff Dead,” streaming now on HBO Max.

The first three episodes of James Gunn’s Peacemaker series have finally arrived on HBO Max, following the titular peace-loving killer after his near-death experience in The Suicide Squad. Throughout these first episodes, Christopher Smith and his A.R.G.U.S. allies embark on a wild journey, during which the show finds several opportunities to drop in some deep-cut references to its DC Comics source material. Let’s take a look at every DC Comics reference in the second and third episodes of Peacemaker.

Economos And Peacemaker Reference Harley Quinn, Weasel And Bat-Mite

In “Best Friend, For Never,” John Economos and Peacemaker get into an argument that results in the former listing off a number of other people who he’d rather be working with. This list includes The Suicide Squad characters Harley Quinn and Weasel, along with a mention of Bat-Mite. As Economos explains, Bat-Mite is an “interdimensional imp who stans Batman,” frequently getting in his idol’s way during his exploits. Bat-Mite is one of the strangest comic book characters of all time, so it only makes since that the oddball-loving James Gunn decided to include a reference to him in Peacemaker.

Peacemaker’s Father Is The DC Villain White Dragon

Despite providing him with his Peacemaker equipment, Christopher Smith’s father Auggie antagonizes his son at every opportunity, calling him weak and demonstrating a clearly racist mentality. In “Best Friend, For Never,” Auggie ends up sent to jail, where the other prisoners recognize him and address him as the White Dragon. This is a reference to the DC Comics character of the same name, who used a high-tech suit of armor to enforce his white supremacist views and died while working as a member of the Suicide Squad. Auggie has already been shown to have what appears to be a pocket dimension full of technology, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him reveal a comic-accurate White Dragon costume before the series is over.

References To Arkham Asylum And Belle Reve

After Auggie is revealed to be the White Dragon, detective Sophie Song mentions that she thought costumed criminals were to be sent to either Arkham Asylum or Belle Reve Prison. These two locations have become iconic at this point in DC Comics’ history, with Arkham Asylum being where Batman’s foes are most commonly imprisoned and Belle Reve serving as the home of the Task Force X project. Arkham Asylum’s last appearance in the DCEU was in Justice League, while Belle Reve previously appeared in both films centered around the Suicide Squad.

Peacemaker Mentions The DC Superhero Dollman

While talking with his teammates about his fear of homunculi, Peacemaker mentions another metahuman named Doll Man who is able to shrink in size. Doll Man is a real character who dates back to the late 1930s, making him the first comic book superhero with a shrinking power. Similarly to Peacemaker himself, Doll Man was created by a different publishing company (Quality Comics), but was made a resident of the DC universe after DC acquired Quality’s characters.
