After releasing a slew of original films throughout its first full year in 2020, Disney+ slowed things down a bit in 2021. The number of original movies dropped down to four that were exclusive to the streaming service and four that were made available through Premier Access (while also arriving in theaters).

That’s not counting documentaries, shorts, or specials like The Muppets Haunted Mansion or Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles. These feature films received a mixed bag of reviews with some being great and others getting panned, which is clear when looking at the average rating on IMDb.

8 Home Sweet Home Alone (3.6)

It’s always a tall task to remake something that is considered a classic. The filmmakers have to pay homage to the original while doing something to make this its own thing and still try to be just as good. It rarely works out that way and unfortunately, it seems like Home Sweet Home Alone missed the mark for many viewers.

A new version of the 1990 Macauley Culkin led Christmas classic Home Alone, this take had potential when it cast Archie Yates as the protagonist. The youngster shined in 2019’s Jojo Rabbit and seemed capable of taking control of this reboot. Alas, most critics and casual viewers felt the slapstick wasn’t as good as in the original among other things.

7 Diary Of A Wimpy Kid (5.3)

You might be surprised to learn that the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise is a long-running one that actually spans five films at this point. Based on a 2007 book of the same name, the previous entries were all in live-action format but this new installment is completely animated, which actually works well for the concept.

The film sees the protagonist, Greg Heffley, dream of one day growing up to become rich and famous but he struggles to survive his days of middle school before he can get there. Reviews were seemingly mixed, with some finding it wholesome and fun but others thinking the animation lacked and only fans of the books will enjoy it.

6 Flora & Ulysses (6.3)

Every Disney Original Movie From 2021 Ranked By IMDb

The first Disney+ original film of 2021 was Flora & Ulysses, arriving in the middle of February. This seemed like the perfect film for the streaming service as it may not have found a big box office audience but is ideal to sit at home and watch with the kids in your family. Based on a book of the same name, it follows a young girl who saves a squirrel that happens to have superpowers.

The wacky premise is one that children adore and adults will like the heartwarming tale at the center. Plus, the cast featuring Alyson Hannigan, Ben Schwartz, and Danny Pudi is one filled with talented comedic performers. The reception was strong, saying it was great fun for the entire family.

5 Jungle Cruise (6.6)

One of Disney+’s Premier Access films was Jungle Cruise. Similar to Pirates of the Caribbean, this is a movie based on a ride at one of Disney’s major theme parks. On paper, that sounds like it might not work well but it does because of the fun adventure at the center of the plot and the interesting characters leading the way.

Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson had fantastic comedic chemistry that made almost every scene a joy. The film sees a riverboat captain lead a scientist and her brother through the jungle on a quest to find the Tree of Life. While not considered a great movie, Jungle Cruise was seen as a fun adventure for the entire family and Johnson earned some People’s Choice Awards for it.

4 Black Widow (6.7)

Since around the time of 2012’s The Avengers, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been hoping for a solo film featuring Natasha Romanoff, better known as Black Widow. Although the character died in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, she finally got her starring role in Black Widow, set a few years before her tragic death.

There were some viewers who felt it hit on too many typical MCU spy film tropes. However, most audience members could look past that due to the dynamic of Natasha reuniting with her old undercover family members as they looked to take down the Red Room where Black Widows are trained. This film also introduced the world to Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who is already a fan favorite and appearing on Hawkeye.

3 Cruella (7.4)

There have been plenty of criticisms fired at Disney’s live-action remakes of their animated classics. Even if the movies are hits and get solid reviews, they struggle to live up to the original. Thankfully, Disney went a different route with Cruella, telling an intriguing origin story for the villain from 101 Dalmatians.

Played expertly by Emma Stone, this take on Cruella de Vil sees her go from an underappreciated dreamer to a fierce fashion designer with a take no prisoners attitude. The film was lauded for the production design, costumes, music, and performances, specifically Stone’s. Taking a different and unique route with the character turned out to be a great idea.

2 Raya And The Last Dragon (7.4)

Every Disney Original Movie From 2021 Ranked By IMDb

2021 saw Walt Disney Animation Studios release two films to high praise. The second one, Encanto, hit theaters and not Disney+ but the first was given Premier Access. That was Raya and the Last Dragon, which follows a warrior princess as she searches for the last dragon in an attempt to bring back her father, save millions of lives, and banish evil spirits.

As is often the case with these films, the animation style was well-received as the movie is beautiful. The voice acting led by Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, and Gemma Chan was also a hit. It seems like Disney’s recent trend of showcasing strong, independent female characters without love stories at the center (Frozen, Moana, etc.) continued to work here.

1 Luca (7.5)

Like Soul in 2020, Pixar’s latest film was exclusively released on Disney+ and not even with Premier Access. It was just there for all subscribers and they appreciated it. Luca proved to be a critical darling, adding yet another fantastic film to Pixar’s history, telling a heartwarming story that is also beautifully animated.

Set in Italy, the movie focuses on two boys who are sea creatures but when they come onto land, they assume a human form. While there, they experience the joys of human life, make friends, and fall in love with the idea of a Vespa. Though it may not have the most complex storyline, it’s a great tale about friendship.
