Gilmore Girls has always been fans’ go-to comfort show for the fall and winter months due to the festive events that take place in the fictional Stars Hollow, as well as Lorelai and Rory’s excitement when it comes to the holiday season. From Lorelai smelling snow to Rory having some of her most romantic experiences in the midst of winter, Gilmore Girls Christmas episodes are always a delight.

However, some of the holiday episodes of the hit teen drama are more beloved than others. For example, season 7’s storyline includes an estranged and awkward Luke and Lorelai, which is not nearly as enjoyable as watching Jess and Rory flirt with one another from across the room in season 2’s “The Bracebridge Dinner.”

8 “Santa’s Secret Stuff” (Season 7, Episode 11) – 7.6

Season 7’s Christmas episode of Gilmore Girls is anything but merry and bright. With Lorelai and Christopher having recently gotten married in Paris and Rory spending the actual holidays in London with Logan, tensions are high in the Gilmore household.

Meanwhile, Luke asks his ex-fiance Lorelai to write a character reference for him so he has a chance of getting partial custody of his daughter April. The letter that Lorelai eventually pens is sweet and a reminder of how much Luke means to her, but her internal struggle to accept the fact that she married Chris and not Luke during this episode is hard to watch. Thankfully, fans get a treat in Lorelai’s memorable “monkey, monkey underpants” monologue.

7 “Just Like Gwen & Gavin” (Season 6, Episode 12) – 7.7

Season 6’s holiday episode is more ‘winter’ themed than anything else, but it does have merry elements like the Stars Hollow Winter Carnival and lots of snow on the ground.

The episode is a bit of a downer, as Lorelai and Luke’s engagement is challenged by the presence of his secret daughter April, who introduces herself to Lorelai before Luke gets a chance to. This causes a rift between them, disappointing fans who waited years for the iconic couple to finally come together. Elsewhere, Rory and Logan slowly find their way back to one another after a brief separation.

6 “Women Of Questionable Morals” (Season 5, Episode 11) – 7.9

One of the most romantic Luke and Lorelai moments occurs during the season 5 Christmas episode, with Luke making a frozen lake in Lorelai’s front yard so that she can go ice-skating after feeling like the snow has betrayed her.

Other than that, the episode features a lot of questionable decisions being made by the Gilmore girls, as the title suggests. Lorelai spends time drinking with Christopher and postpones telling her current boyfriend, Luke, and Rory struggles to connect with her father. On a happier note, Richard and Emily get a delightful storyline about rescuing a lost dog, something that allows them to reconnect and agree to work on their marriage.

5 “That’ll Do, Pig” (Season 3, Episode 10) – 8.1

Season 3 of Gilmore Girls was one of the best, mostly due to the romance between Rory Gilmore and Jess Mariano. In this Christmas episode, Rory urges Jess to take her to the Stars Hollow Winter Carnival, but he is not nearly as excited about it as she is. There they run into her ex-boyfriend Dean and his little sister, and things are awkward and contentious — but also fascinating to watch.

Elsewhere, Emily struggles to appease Richard’s mother, so Lorelai gives her advice that she uses when dealing with Emily herself. It’s a great bonding moment between two of the Gilmore girls and allows Emily to gain a little understanding of why her relationship with Lorelai is sometimes so strained, and what she can do to make it better.

4 “In The Clamor And The Clangor” (Season 4, Episode 11) – 8.2

Season 4 of Gilmore Girls didn’t feature a traditional Christmas episode, but instead had this wintery-themed one. Season 4 was a transition period for the Gilmores, with Rory going to Yale and being single for the first time, and Lorelai opening her own inn and slowly realizing her romantic feelings for Luke.

In this episode, Lorelai and Luke are brought together by the annoyance of the church bells, where Lorelai finally admits to her longtime friend that she doesn’t want him to move in with Nicole. It’s a big step forward in them revealing their love for another, and a hilarious throwaway storyline about new bells in town.

3 “Winter” (Season 8, Episode 1) – 8.2

“Winter” was the first episode of Gilmore Girls in nearly a decade and the first installment of the Netflix revival series. It featured a lot of information about the lost decade of the Gilmores, including the revelation that Richard has passed away and Rory is struggling in her career.

It’s a great episode about reuniting with family and being brought back home for the holidays — especially because it sees Rory reevaluating her life and going back to her best friend — her mother, for guidance. There are tons of callbacks to the original series, in addition to the thrilling confirmation that Luke and Lorelai did get back together in the series finale back in 2007.

2 “Forgiveness & Stuff” (Season 1, Episode 10) – 8.4

“Forgiveness and Stuff” marked a turning point in the first season of Gilmore Girls. It introduced the real possibility of a Luke and Lorelai romance happening sooner rather than later (though fans all know it ended up happening much later than they would’ve liked) and allowed Rory, Lorelai, and Emily to all forgive one another in the midst of a serious family issue.

After a health scare lands Richard in the hospital, the Gilmores all decide to let bygones be bygones and forgive one another for the latest family fight (Rory falling asleep next to Dean at Miss Patty’s after curfew). It’s a beautiful episode about family and forgiveness and the importance of being there for each other during the holidays (and at every other time of year too).

1 “The Bracebridge Dinner” (Season 2, Episode 10) – 8.7

Season 2’s “The Bracebridge Dinner” is far and away the greatest Gilmore Girls Christmas episode for a number of reasons. One being that it brings all the characters together into one room and allows them to interact in a way they never have before. With characters from Stars Hollow and Hartford coming together, drama ensues like never before.

Jess and Dean are doing their best to get under one another’s skin and fight for Rory’s attention, while Lorelai just wants everyone to be happy and enjoy a holiday dinner at the Independence Inn. Richard and Emily get a chance to see Lorelai’s work up close, which gives them a new understanding of the kind of capable leader their daughter is. It perfectly encapsulates reuniting with family for the holidays; food, fights, and so much fun.
