The horror movie genre will be getting a boost in the fall months of 2021, with the titles set to release between September the end of November. After a year of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was unclear how the movie industry would recover, especially when it comes to theatrical releases. Interestingly enough, the horror genre has helped immensely in jump-starting interest in returning to theaters. In addition, streamers continue to bolster their horror offerings, especially Netflix.
Because of lingering shutdowns, the heavy-hitting releases didn’t start dropping until the spring months, specifically May. First, the ninth installment of the Saw franchise, Spiral, debuted, shortly followed by Netflix’s Army of the Dead and A Quiet Place Part II. The latter of which brought on the revival of the movie theater, exceeding box office expectations. The summer months kept the momentum going with The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Forever Purge, and the Fear Street trilogy of movies.
Though the summer season technically ends in late September, for the purpose of this list, let’s assume the fall season begins at the start of September. The movie industry had several notable titles leading up to this period, with August releases highlighted by Don’t Breathe 2 (August 13th), The Night House (August 20th), and Nia DaCosta’s Candyman sequel (August 27th). That said, there’s plenty of other horror movies still to come in September, October, and November. Here’s every major horror movie coming out in the fall of 2021.
Malignant – September 10
James Wan’s upcoming horror movie, Malignant, was shrouded in secrecy during most of the production stages. Though the title was announced in 2019, details regarding the plot weren’t unveiled until July 2021, just two months before its debut. The movie follows Annabelle Wallis’ Madison, a young woman paralyzed by visions of gruesome murders. The visions, however, become a reality, worsening her condition. Fellow cast members include Maddie Hasson, George Youn, Michole Briana White, Ingrid Bisu, and McKenna Grace. As a Warner Bros. title, Wan’s Malignant will hit HBO Max on September 10th, the same day as the theatrical release.
Halloween Kills – October 15
After being delayed an entire year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Halloween Kills will finally hit theaters on October 15th. The highly-anticipated sequel takes place just moments after the concluding events of 2018’s Halloween. It follows Michael Myers escaping Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) burning house before continuing his rampage throughout Haddonfield. Meanwhile, Karen (Judy Greer) and Allyson (Matichak) accompany Laurie to the hospital before joining other townspeople like Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall) in taking down “The Shape” for good. Other recognizable faces confirmed for Halloween Kills include Kyle Richards, Nancy Stephens, and Charles Cyphers, who all appeared in John Carpenter’s original Halloween. While the Strode women and Haddonfield will put up a fight, David Gordon Green has one more film installment in the works with Halloween Ends, which is expected to premiere in October 2022.
Last Night In Soho – October 29
Last Night in Soho, Edgar Wright’s newest film, comes four years after his last scripted film, Baby Driver. Rather than return to the action genre, Wright dove back into horror with a psychological twist. The movie follows Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), an aspiring fashion designer who gets transported to 1966 London. Rather than appear as herself, she’s brought back in time inside the body of Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy), a singer who happens to be Eloise’s idol. Shortly after living as Sandy, Eloise’s reality starts to crack with terrifying repercussions. Other notable names featured alongside McKenzie and Taylor-Joy include Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, Rita Tushingham, and Jessie Mei Li. Like Halloween Kills, Last Night in Soho was originally scheduled to release in the fall of 2020, before being pushed back a year.
Antlers – October 29
Scott Cooper’s latest comes in the form of a supernatural horror titled Antlers. Originally scheduled to debut in April 2020, the movie was delayed until late October 2021 because of COVID-19. The horror film follows Julia Meadows (Keri Russell), a teacher from an Oregon town who is worried about a student named Lucas (Jeremy T. Weaver). Julia turns to the town’s sheriff, Paul Meadows (Jesse Plemons), who also happens to be her brother. Matters become more complicated when it’s revealed Lucas is keeping supernatural creatures in his house. The movie, which Guillermo del Toro produced, also stars Graham Greene, Scott Haze, Rory Cochrane, and Amy Madigan.
Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City – November 24
The final title on the list with a confirmed fall 2021 release date is Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The movie directed by Johannes Roberts is a reboot of the Resident Evil film series, and it’s based on the first two video game titles from the ’90s. When the pharmaceutical company Umbrella Corporation leaves Raccoon city, the area transforms into a wasteland with evil lurking under the surface. A group, including members of Special Tactics And Rescue Service (STARS), set out to travel through Raccoon City while investigating the Umbrella Corporation’s sinister truth. Prominent characters include siblings Claire and Chris Redfield (Kaya Scodelario and Robbie Amell), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen), Leon S. Kennedy (Avan Jogia), Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper), and William Birkin (Neal McDonough). Depending on the success of Welcome to Raccoon City, the Resident Evil franchise extend beyond the initial reboot.
There’s Someone Inside Your House – TBA
While not confirmed to release in the fall of 2021, there’s speculation Netflix will debut There’s Someone Inside Your House in time for the Halloween season. The streaming giant celebrates the spooky autumn months with an annual “Netflix and Chills” event, which could be headlined with the slasher movie based on the 2017 novel by Stephanie Perkins. Directed by Patrick Brice, the story follows Makani Young (Sydney Park), a Hawaiian native who relocates to Nebraska in the hopes of finishing high school. Soon after, her classmates become the victims of a serial killer that wears the face resembling those being terrorized. As the killer uncovers dark secrets, Makani teams up with others to stop the terror. Aside from Park, the James Wan-produced horror movie features Theodore Pellerin, Asjha Cooper, Dale Whibley, and Sarah Dugdale.
