Every Known Item In Raiders Of The Lost Ark’s Warehouse

Raiders Of The Lost Ark ends with the reveal of a vast warehouse that stores top secret artifacts, but what known items reside there? Raiders Of The Lost Ark was intended by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas to be a tribute to the movie serials they loved growing up, but Harrison Ford nearly missed out on the role of Indiana Jones. Lucas was reportedly reluctant to cast the star and preferred someone lesser known, with Tom Selleck almost nabbing it. Selleck was forced to depart due to a schedule conflict with Magnum P.I. – the series that made him a star – and Ford was cast instead.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark is one of the best adventure films ever made and is loaded with famous scenes, dialogue and characters. Indiana himself became a pop culture icon and soon returned for 1984 sequel Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and the “trilogy” was closed out with Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. In the years that followed the franchise spawned a prequel TV show, novels, video games and more, before Ford donned the hat and whip for 2008’s Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. While the sequel was eagerly awaited, many now considered the fourth movie to be a real mess that relied on lame humor and cartoony CGI.

Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull at least had a fun opening sequence, which revisited a very familiar location. The last shot of Raiders Of The Lost Ark reveals a massive warehouse where the government seals away The Ark itself, and Crystal Skull revealed this is Hanger 51 in the Nevada desert. There are clearly countless artifacts locked away in Hanger 51, but only a handful have been confirmed.

The first is the Ark of the Covenant itself, the biblical artifact which Indy and Marion Ravenwood spend Raiders Of The Lost Ark trying to recover. The Ark was used to carry the Ten Commandments, and Indiana Jones and Marion got to see its power – well, they saw the aftermath – firsthand when the Nazis opened it and were destroyed by its power. The government decided to lock The Ark away instead of studying it, and it makes a cameo in the fourth movie.

Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull has Indiana forced by Soviet agents to help them recover the mummified remains of the alien found at Roswell in 1947. This is the second big artifact in Hanger 51, but Crystal Skull’s bonus feature Iconic Props reveals an unseen item is in the warehouse. This is Moses’ Staff of Kings, based on the staff wielded by Charlton Heston in The Ten Commandments. Since the Staff isn’t shown onscreen though, its canon status is dubious. Fans of the series may recall the 2009 video game Indiana Jones And The Staff Of Kings too, where Indy recovers the title relic in 1939. In the end, it turns into a snake and slithers away, making its presence in Raiders Of The Lost Ark’s infamous Hanger 51 questionable.
