No superhero has managed to shine on the big screen for as long as Batman has. Dating back to the 1960s, he has been the star of his own solo films and he has appeared in a handful of team-up movies within the DCEU. Unfortunately, not all of them have proven to be great pictures.

Batman’s history in cinema is such a mixed bag. Some of his movies are considered among the best superhero flicks ever made, yet he’s also been at the center of a few that are viewed as being at the bottom of the barrel. That’s clear when looking at the ratings of these movies on IMDb.

12 Batman & Robin (3.8)

Easily the worst-reviewed Batman film was the one that arrived in 1997. With George Clooney as the fourth actor to play Bruce Wayne since 1989, he led Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin. This film made it more of a team effort as Batman joined up with Robin and Batgirl.

It featured Schumacher’s trademark cheesiness but lacked some of the fun of the previous iteration. From the odd choice to have nipples on the suits to having two villains who don’t make any sense teaming up, this was panned by fans and critics alike.

11 Batman Forever (5.4)

After Tim Burton managed to change the way people looked at the Batman character, Joel Schumacher took over the franchise. He started with 1995’s Batman Forever, which returned the hero to some of the campiness that surrounded him back in his ’60s TV show days.

It was colorful and had some enjoyable bits like Jim Carrey’s overacting as The Riddler. However, it was said that this had a bit too much going on and none of the characters besides the charismatic villains stood out. Plus, while Val Kilmer was okay as Batman, he missed the mark as Wayne.

10 Suicide Squad (6.0)

This is something of a forgotten one. It’s a case where Batman appears for such a small time that it gets overlooked. 2016’s Suicide Squad was meant to be a crucial piece in the greater DCEU but the film was a critical failure that hurt the series.

While the focus on a group of villains was a cool idea, the characters were thinly written and the antagonist lacked. Batman showed up for a few minutes going against the likes of Deadshot and Harley Quinn, mostly in flashbacks. Despite the poor reception, this did win an Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling.

9 Justice League (6.2)

Although Suicide Squad proved to be a problematic film, it was 2017’s Justice League that really crushed the DCEU. After plenty of issues with production, Joss Whedon came in to finish the film and made many changes. The end result was a muddled mess at best.

Batman helped bring together the top heroes of DC to go up against Steppenwolf in this film but the tone was inconsistent throughout. It didn’t help that this underperformed in a major way at the box office.

8 Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice (6.4)

Fans had been clamoring for something like this on the big screen for a long time. DC’s top two male superheroes colliding. It was even teased in a fake poster in the movie I Am Legend. Nine years later in 2016, fans got Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The second official Superman movie in the DCEU sees Lex Luthor find a way to pit the two heroes against one another. After their fight, they end up becoming partners and facing off against Doomsday. This marked the debut of Ben Affleck as Batman and also introduced Wonder Woman to the franchise.

7 Batman 1966 (6.5)

The first of two films officially titled Batman, this one arrived in 1966. It starred Adam West as the titular character and was a continuation of the popular television series. That means it includes the classic campiness that Batman was known for at the time.

It could be said that this doesn’t hold up that well after all of these decades but the reviews are still solid. You can tell that everyone involved is having a blast with it and that there’s a certain charm to the whole thing.

6 Batman Returns (7.0)

Following the massive success that Tim Burton’s Batman was in 1989, it was only fitting that he was given a sequel to work with. That came in 1992 with Batman Returns. Burton upped the ante by bringing in multiple villains instead of one with The Penguin and Catwoman at the forefront.

Michael Keaton was once again really strong as Batman but it was arguably the performances of Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito that stole the show. Though considered a step down from the original, it’s still viewed as a pretty great Batman flick.

5 Batman 1989 (7.5)

When 1989 came around and Tim Burton got the chance to helm a Batman movie, nobody really knew what to expect. The character was known for being cheesy but this was a darker take on him. Burton and Keaton came together to change the perception of Batman.

Again though, the villain was probably the true highlight. Jack Nicholson gave a captivating and over-the-top performance as The Joker. While Burton was very loose with stuff from the comics regarding things like origin stories, most aspects of this were praised from the acting to the tone to the music.

4 Zack Snyder’s Justice League (8.2)

This was never meant to see the light of day. As noted, production on Justice League was filled with issues. Due to the negative reception it received, loyal fans clamored for years for Zack Snyder’s original vision to get released. It finally happened in 2021 on HBO Max.

Snyder’s initial plans were seen, while they also went back and reshot/added several elements. The end result was a four-hour movie that totally reimagined and improved various characters including Batman, Cyborg, and The Flash. It was much better received than the original.

3 Batman Begins (8.2)

While Tim Burton’s contributions to Batman cannot be overlooked, Christopher Nolan once again changed things. His version of the character, starting with 2005’s Batman Begins, was gritty and felt somewhat realistic despite being seeped in comic book lore.

Christian Bale took over as Bruce Wayne and used his phenomenal acting talents to boost this. The film went back to tell a spin on the origin story that hadn’t been seen in a movie just yet while setting the stage for what went on to become an epic trilogy.

2 The Dark Knight Rises (8.4)

Following the massive success that was Christopher Nolan’s second Batman film, the final leg in his trilogy had tons to live up to. On paper, it had every element needed. That included Tom Hardy’s unique take on the villainous Bane, a remarkably huge scope, and a tremendously talented cast.

For the most part, this 2012 flick delivered. It wrapped up several pieces of the story in a satisfying way while giving fans the likes of Catwoman and Bane in memorable iterations. There were a few question marks regarding some aspects and the final scenes but it was mostly a rousing success.

1 The Dark Knight (9.0)

For as good as Batman Begins was, it’s hard to hold a candle to the follow-up. 2008’s The Dark Knight is not only a huge success commercially (grossing over $1 billion) but also critically as it is still viewed by many as the greatest superhero movie ever made.

The film tells the incredible story of Harvey Dent’s tragic fall into madness as Two-Face while also making sure that The Joker was arguably the best he’s ever been. Heath Ledger’s fantastic turn as Joker earned him a posthumous Academy Award victory.
