Every Marvel Hero In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Eidos-Montréal’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy video game features a wide roster of cosmic Marvel heroes, with Star-Lord interacting with both his fellow Guardians and other Marvel characters over the course of its story. Each individual Guardian has a long history in Marvel Comics, and Eidos-Montréal’s well-written action-adventure incorporates key elements from their respective backstories, including their own relationships with other Marvel heroes. In addition to Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot, a few more heroes also appear, letting players experience just a tiny fraction of the team’s comics history.

In crafting Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, developer Eidos-Montréal created its own interpretation of the Marvel Universe – one that was separate to the comics, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and other recent Marvel Games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Avengers. Both the comics and James Gunn’s MCU films were an influence on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which meant that several of the game’s characters combined traits from both of them. With that in mind, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy offers a unique depiction of the Marvel mythos, and one that could be further explored in a sequel with even more heroes.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t talk down to any potential player, throwing around a lot of Marvel terminology with an expectation of familiarity with the comics and/or films. Characters in the game have appeared in both mediums, but some have only appeared in the former. This illustrates how deep into comics lore Eidos-Montréal went in its love letter to this radical band of misfits, and of cosmic Marvel more generally.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Game’s Heroes – Star-Lord

Peter Quill, known to a select few across the galaxy as Star-Lord, is the leader of the Guardians team. Star-Lord is the only playable character in GOTG. He’s depicted as an ’80s metalhead in the game’s opening flashback, which is a stark contrast to his love of groovy ’70s rock in the movies. Other than that discrepancy, fans of the film will recognize the game’s playable character as a close facsimile to Chris Pratt’s portrayal of the Marvel hero on the silver screen. He is a scoundrel with a heart of gold who seems to luck his way through tough combat situations and prolonged arguments between his teammates.

One interesting note about Eidos-Montréal’s version of the character is that he brings over abilities from his most recent comic incarnation. His element guns draw from superpowers the character had in his retconned debut in the 1970s, long before he was a part of the Guardians team. Square Enix’s game beats the MCU to the punch by introducing them, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Star-Lord blasting foes with icicles in James Gunn’s upcoming sequel either.

Every Hero In Guardians Of The Galaxy – Gamora

The green-skinned Gamora is known as the most dangerous woman in the galaxy, and for good reason. Her sharp blade makes quick work of any foes the Guardians face throughout the adventure. It’s also handy for cutting through the types of hazards space adventurers might find on derelict starships and alien worlds, something that comes up quite often in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

While this version of Gamora has a new hairstyle and some awesome war paint, the core of the character hasn’t changed much in the translation from the comics or the films. She still has a long history with Thanos in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, something that she’ll go into great detail about if players choose to engage in her conversations between missions. She also still acts as a straight woman to the antics of the other Guardians on many occasions, although she’s unburdened by a superfluous tryst with Peter Quill and gets more of an opportunity to show her own quirks here as a result.

Drax The Destroyer Is In Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

The muscle behind the Guardians, Marvel’s GOTG’s Drax shares similarities with the MCU version, as his matter-of-fact view on his surroundings continues to provide offbeat comic relief. What does change between game and film, though, is Drax’s look, with Square Enix going for a more comics-accurate version of the character’s teal skin and pronounced battle scars.

Even though Drax’s visuals differ greatly between both versions, Marvel’s GOTG does provide an MCU outfit for the character just in case players prefer that look. Just like all the unlockable cosmetics, the costume is well-hidden, but players who play around with the puzzle mechanics and peek around every corner will stumble across the costume during Chapter 4.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Features Rocket Racoon

The surly engineer of the Guardians, Rocket Racoon’s character is firmly established across comics, movies, and in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Rocket’s relationship with Groot is unbreakable, but his connection with other members of the team is tenuous at best. Still, it’s always great to have his wide array of weapons on hand during a pivotal battle.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket exhibits one of the more outlandish aspects of his character. Namely, the game’s incarnation wields oversized laser weaponry that seems to teleport in and out at just the right moment. Late in the game, Rocket even gains the highly useful ability to unleash a cartoonish barrage of cannons and miniguns. Needless to say, this Rambo 3-esque display ends up as one of the best ultimate abilities on the team.

Groot Joins Rocket Raccoon In Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

Rounding out the Guardians is the Flora colossus known as Groot. Rocket’s best buddy speaks only in his own tongue, which translates to the phrase “I am Groot” in regular conversation. Thankfully, Rocket’s mostly-accurate translations and the tone of his voice allow the player to pick up on exactly what the plant creature has on his mind.

Groot retains his full body size throughout GOTG, which may be disappointing to those who enjoyed the antics of the baby-sized Groot in the second Guardians film. Instead of his cute look, players can enjoy comic costumes from his time as a horseman of Apocalypse or several cosmetics where he puts on clothes, which is certainly a change of pace for the all-natural hero.

Mantis Is One Of The Heroes In Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

Outside of the core Guardians, Star-Lord and his crew have made several good friends across the galaxy. One that comes over from the films is Mantis, although Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy gives players a much different version of the character than the one James Gunn crafted in 2017.

Eidos-Montréal lets Mantis take on the weird energy that the team is known for, portraying her as a fortune-telling savant that alternates between valley girl slang and all-serious predictions. This plus references to her role as the Celestial Madonna gives players a much better look at the character that fans love from Marvel’s many comic adventures. The version of Mantis in Marvel’s GOTG is unlike the MCU’s, and showcases one of the better occasions where Eidos-Montréal chose to ignore the films.

Players Can Meet Adam Warlock Before His Guardians Vol. 3 Debut

Adam Warlock is a vintage character from Marvel’s cosmic lineup. Long before his MCU premiere in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Eidos-Montréal lets players engage with the verbose venturer and his particular way of postulating about his predicament.

Eidos-Montréal portrays the powerful hero as a nuisance to the slacker Guardians about the Milano. Still, despite their annoyance, Warlock proves to be a vital part of the adventure. The character has long had a significant role when it comes to Marvel’s cosmic adventures, and his appearance in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy signals that other mediums are about to catch up.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Game’s Heroes – Cosmo

Anyone who has seen this dog appear ever so briefly in the Guardians of the Galaxy films should be overjoyed to hear that Cosmo has a bigger role in Marvel’s GOTG, with Eidos-Montréal leaning heavily into the character’s comics whilst providing its own spin.

Retaining his incredible backstory as a 20th Century astronaut animal with psychic powers, Cosmo lords over the marketplace of Knowhere as its head of security. While he’s firmly on the right side of the law, he finds the Guardians indispensable when his city and the greater galaxy fall into peril.

GOTGs Nikki Was An Original Guardian In Marvel Comics

While modern fans of the Guardians may not know the name by heart, Nikki is a character with a lot of history with the team. Originally appearing as Nikki Gold with the 31st-century version written by Steve Gerber and penciled by Al Milgrom in the 1970s, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy marks only the second occasion the character has appeared in video games, with Nikki having previously featured in DLC for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2.

She takes on a much different role as the daughter of Star-Lord’s former Kree flame Ko-Rel and appears throughout the game in various roles. Her potential as a hero eventually shines through as the campaign goes on and stands as one of Eidos-Montréal’s best adaptions in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
