There are a lot of mobs in Minecraft, but their varying levels of utility can make it hard for players to determine which ones they should devote their time to. Some mobs are a necessity for survival and can provide an endless supply of food, while others feel like a waste of space. This article will rank every passive mob in Minecraft so players know which ones are useful and which they should avoid.

Minecraft currently has 28 passive mobs, and new mobs will be added in the next Minecraft update. These creatures won’t pay any mind to the player until they attempt to interact with them. Some passive mobs will attack players who disrupt their environments, while others will run away from players when struck or approached. Some mobs travel in groups, and if one takes damage, the rest will attack the player. Others can be tamed to form a pack that can protect the player from hostile mobs. Mobs can be ridden, caught, and traded, adding various layers to the simple sandbox game.

All of these different mobs can be hard to keep track of, and newer players may not want to fiddle with mobs they’re unfamiliar with. Below is a breakdown of every passive mob in Minecraft. Some mobs don’t have any use, while others are integral for survival.

15. Minecraft’s Useless Passive Mobs

Minecraft has a handful of useless mobs that aren’t worth tackling individually, as they serve little purpose. The Bat, Polar Bear, Panda, and Llama are the four worst mobs in Minecraft because they don’t offer players anything for their efforts. Llamas can act as mobile storage, but they take too much effort to move around. Polar Bears and Pandas serve no purpose and don’t drop any useful items when killed, and Bats are even less useful, as they drop absolutely nothing on death.

The next five mobs are not as useless as the first batch – but not by much. The Wolf, Ocelot, Cat, Parrot, and Fox are tamable Minecraft mobs that the player can feed to gain their trust. They don’t drop items when killed, and some will even attack the player when they take damage.

They also have a small chance of dropping a Rabbit’s Foot, which can be used to make Minecraft’s potions. Rabbits are difficult to breed and farm, so players are better off focusing on other sources of food and leather.

Minecraft has a variety of fish, but they all serve the same purpose, with the exception of the Blowfish. This is incredibly useful for the beginning of a new world or if players need to make a quick aquatic getaway from Drowned.

These three mobs are pretty similar, and it’d be hard to rank each one individually because their usefulness depends on how a player wants to use them. Steeds such as the Horse, Donkey, and Mule are great ways to traverse land quickly, and the Mule and Donkey can act as portable storage units. Horses can move quicker and jump higher, but they can’t hold any extra items. Breeding Horses in Minecraft isn’t too simple, but it can help the player get a Horse with better stats. Horses also drop leather when killed, which makes wild Horses a good leather source, if players don’t mind their horrendous death sound.

These ugly creatures are one of the newest additions to the game, and they are also super useful when traveling in the Nether. Striders were added during Minecraft’s Nether update, along with the new Nether biomes. If a player equips a Strider with a saddle and uses a mushroom fishing rod, the Strider can carry them across large lava lakes. They are also pretty quick in lava making, them the best mode of transportation in the Nether. They only drop string when killed, making them useless outside of mobility.

Pigs are food, and that is the only purpose they serve. However, a cooked porkchop replenishes the most hunger bars and has the highest amount of saturation of all cooked meats. Pigs are easy to breed, and killing them with a flame sword automatically cooks the meat. They may not offer much else, but players will never go hungry with a hearty supply of Pigs.

Sheep offer an infinite source of wool in Minecraft, and they offer a pretty decent supply of food, if players’ Sheep farms become overpopulated. They are easy to breed, and players can dye sheep any color to produce that color of wool. Sheep of different colors can be bred to make Sheep of a new color, and their wool will always grow back as long as they have access to grass blocks. Wool is an important block to have for beds, decorations, and mob-proofing, making Sheep an essential mob to have around.

4. Minecraft’s Passive Mobs: Cows

Minecraft’s Cows and Mooshrooms are pretty important mobs, despite their boring appearances. Mooshrooms can be used as an infinite supply of soup, which is a fantastic food source, and Cows are the best source of leather in Minecraft. Players will need a lot of books when enchanting, and that means they will also need a lot of leather. Steak is also a pretty good food source and is a byproduct of killing Cows for leather.

For non-Redstone players, Bees may not be as exciting as other mobs, but these flying arthropods singlehandedly changed Minecraft’s Redstone functionality with the addition of Honey Blocks.

Villagers give players access to almost any item in the game in exchange for emeralds. These passive mobs are the best way for players to enchant their gear without the hassle of enchantment tables. They are also the best way to get Minecraft’s coveted Mending enchantment, and they never run out of stuff, so players can trade with them endlessly to get what they need. They do require a bit of work to get the right trades and prices, but a Villager trading center will revolutionize the way players enjoy Minecraft.

New creatures are continually added to Minecraft, so it’s possible these could bump some of the mobs listed here down a few ranks. Mobs are also subject to change, if developers decide to make them more useful. However, it’ll be pretty hard for a mob to dethrone the Villager. Yet, there are still plenty of creatures Minecraft needs to add that could further enhance players’ experiences.
