One of the most highly anticipated games revealed during the PlayStation 5 Showcase was Horizon Forbidden West. The trailer for Horizon Forbidden West provides a first hand look at some of the new environments and creatures players can expect from the upcoming title. A sequel to the acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn, the trailer shows the full scope of the PS5’s rendering capabilities, alongside the magnificent work Guerrilla Games has done using the newfound power of the Decima engine.

Horizon Forbidden West is set after the events of the first game, following Aloy as she leaves the Colorado/Utah area and travels westward. The trailer for Horizon Forbidden West highlights upon the mysteries that hang over this new land and the machines that seemingly cover ever facet of it. As Aloy travels deeper into the Western United States, she will encounter machines, new and old, in her quest to protect these lands. The trailer gave fans a small glimpse at some of these new creatures they can expect to see in the upcoming game.

The first new machine revealed in Horizon Forbidden West’s trailer is a Shellsnapper. These formidable machines, with their snapping turtle-like appearances, seemingly reside in swampy environments, laying dormant under the water until they are disturbed. These machines can remain unmoving for weeks on end, allowing for large amounts of vegetation to grow upon their backs. The new bovine built machine is the Bristleback. The trailer depicts one of these creatures being subdued by a group of tribespeople, six of whom are working together in an attempt to override this mysterious beast. Guerrilla provided more information on these machines on Twitter, explaining how Bristlebacks, as a herd-based Acquisition Type, will turn aggressive when threatened. Equipped with a pair of lethal tusks, it seems wise to be cautious around these “animals.”

A new flying-type machine can be seen during Horizon Forbidden West’s title card reveal. These Sunwings bear a strong resemblance to pterosaurs, though little more can be glimpsed about their nature at this time. However, based upon their name and solar panel inspired wing design, it’s possible that these machines could utilize solar energy in some form. The last of the machines revealed in the trailer is the Tremortusk. Armored with a massive trunk and four tusk-like protrusions, these mammoths are clearly a formidable foe for anyone who stumbles across them. In the trailer, they can be seen readied for war among the ranks of a human tribe as Aloy stands down against them. As such, fans can expect that these forbidding machines will be found both in the wild and among enemy lines.

Horizon Forbidden West also promises the return of some old machines from Horizon Zero Dawn. A Charger can be seen being used as a mount by Aloy in the early parts of the trailer. This Acquisition Type machine was one of three which could be ridden in the original game. The formidable crocodile-like Snapmaws are also making a return. With the trailer emphasizing the new underwater exploration mechanic, these aggressive machines are seen swimming through kelp forest environments while guarding underwater locations.

According to a game director Mathijs de Jonge in a recent YouTube Guerrilla Talks video, fans can expect dozens of new machines in the upcoming title. Players will once again need to override each machine in order to study and analyze their physiology and weaknesses in a quest to uncover the secrets hidden within the massive world of Horizon Forbidden West. With Guerrilla Games actively updating their fan base about what’s to be expected in the game, it’s likely that a lot of new features and creatures will be revealed in the upcoming months.
