The release of the seventh Paranormal Activity movie, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, sees the franchise continue its trend of a new entry every few years. With so many movies, there’s definitely a wide variation in quality among them, ranging from terrifyingly scary to some being downright comical. Here are all seven Paranormal Activity movies ranked from least scary to the most downright terrifying.

7. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension Is the Least Scary in the Franchise

While Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension can be respected for trying something different, unfortunately, it’s that same ambition that ruined the movie. The camera setups in the haunted house are given the ability to actually see the ghosts, but unfortunately, this only took away any sense of tension, as now all the scares can be seen coming.

6. Paranormal Activity 4 Uses an Xbox To Aid Its Scares

Paranormal Activity 4 plays with the classic concept of witches and sacrifices, but by adding nothing unique to the idea, it comes across as bland and unoriginal. And while the movie did try something new by adding an Xbox Kinect — which can detect entities through infrared — the idea is barely used to its full potential and results in only a cheap scare.

5. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Has Teens Possessed

Being another movie playing with the concept of witches, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones has a house of teenagers being possessed, one by one. Despite the possession adding a new twist, the abilities that the possessed teens gain border on comical, with them teleporting and levitating around the house.

4. Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin Has Cult Activity

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin is the latest in the franchise, and one of the more scarier entries. Moving away from the typical house setting, a group of friends becomes trapped in an Amish cult of devil worshippers. This installment uses the effective simplicity of darkness and claustrophobia, with lots of tight caverns and caves prime for jump-scares.

3. Paranormal Activity 3 Uses Moving Cameras For Better Scares

While Paranormal Activity 3’s story isn’t the most gripping, it features some of the best scares in the franchise. One of the most effective concepts in the movie is the use of a rotating camera in the house’s kitchen and living room, as tension builds from a new scare being revealed with every rotation.

2. Paranormal Activity’s Simplicity Is Still Impressive and Effective

Being the one that started it all, Paranormal Activity still stands as one of the scariest in the franchise. What makes the movie so effective is its simplicity, as the house is haunted by a demon which is never seen and is barely explained, adding a strong sense of mystery. And the movie received tons of hype on release, marketed as one of the scariest horror movies to date.

1. Paranormal Activity 2 Is the Scariest in the Franchise

Paranormal Activity 2 does a great job of expanding upon the first movie without going overboard with new ideas. Featuring an even more aggressive demon than the first, Paranormal Activity 2 does a great job using the fear of the unknown, with the main scares coming from the house’s basement. Many people can relate to the basement fear as it’s the most pitch-black and claustrophobic area in the house, which the movie definitely uses to its full potential.
