Korra is the current Avatar in The Legend of Korra, and she mastered many different powers as a result of being the Avatar. Several years after Avatar: The Last Airbender ended, fans of the original animated series were treated with a return to the Avatar world. The Last Airbender creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino led the creation of The Legend of Korra, picking up the story roughly 70 years after Aang defeated the Fire Nation.

The Legend of Korra launched in 2012 and introduced viewers to a very different world and protagonist than what The Last Airbender featured. The series opens with the White Lotus visiting a young Korra to see if she has been chosen to be the new Avatar after Aang’s death. The story then fast-forwards 17 years to show Korra mastering her craft and reveal just how much the world has changed. Technological advancements made the world a bit more modern, and a fifth nation, the United Republic of Nations, was founded so that people from all four of the original nations could live together.

Throughout the four seasons of The Legend of Korra, viewers went with Korra on an incredible journey of self-discovery. But, since this is a follow-up to Avatar: The Last Airbender, the show is also filled with lots of action and bending of the four primary elements: Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. Multiple characters can bend one element, but Korra can control them all as the Avatar. Her incredible power is continuously displayed, but she has an even more extensive array of abilities than just traditional bending techniques.

Bending All Four Elements

As the person selected to be the next Avatar after Aang, Korra possesses the rare ability to control all four primary forms of elemental bending. She is a member of the Water Tribe, and the Avatar cycle meant a natural waterbender would be chosen to follow in Aang’s footsteps. But Korra was uniquely skilled when it came to learning other bending techniques, as she already had some ability to use earthbending and firebending by the age of 4. It isn’t clear how she managed to learn these skills at such a young age, but Korra mastered earthbending, firebending, and waterbending by the time she was seventeen. She then begins training with Aang’s son, Tenzin, in the art of airbending.

Her skill level with each is high, as she’s demonstrated the ability to fly with firebending like Ozai. Korra’s power in all four types of elemental bending can even be taken a step further. The Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise has shown members of specific bending types learn specialized skills over time. Katara learned to heal herself and others using waterbending, while Toph became the first earthbender to manipulate metal. Korra managed to learn both of these techniques during the show, thanks in large part of Katara and Toph providing their insights to the processes.

The Avatar State

As the Avatar, Korra also eventually managed to enter the Avatar State. The all-powerful state gives the Avatar the ability to channel bending abilities they have not yet mastered by connecting to the Avatar’s past lives. It can be triggered unconsciously if the Avatar is in danger as a defense mechanism, while more experienced Avatars also can enter the state at will. Korra’s journey to using the Avatar State, though, was very different from the chakra unlocking process Aang went through in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Korra originally was not able to enter the Avatar State on her own, and the spirit of Aang was the key to this changing. He helped her connect with the past lives of the Avatar during season 1 of The Legend of Korra, which enabled her to finally enter the Avatar State at will. Korra lost her ability to bend and enter the Avatar State multiple times throughout the series, but she managed to regain her abilities later on each time.

Energybending

Aang’s spirit also helped Korra master the art of energybending during The Legend of Korra. The ancient technique creates the ability to take away someone’s bending abilities and even restore them. Aang passed on the knowledge of spiritbending he learned from the lion turtle to Korra in an effort to undo what happened during the Anti-Bending Revolution. This period of time saw Amon take people’s bending abilities away using bloodbending, and Korra made it her mission to restore their abilities after she defeated him. Korra helped nearly every single person who lost their bending due to Amon, although she refused to restore the abilities of those who previously used them to commit crimes. She also never used energybending to take away anyone’s bending abilities, even though Aang did so multiple times.

There are a few other techniques Korra learned thanks to energybending. She is capable of manipulating spirit energy originating from the Spirit World, and also learned astral projection. However, Korra showcased different uses of it than Aang. On one occasion, Korra’s energybending allowed her to connect to her inner spirit and cosmic energy, which gave her the ability to create a giant astral form. She still had her waterbending abilities in this form but could also shoot beams of energy from her chest. Korra used this form to defeat the Dark Avatar.

Spiritbending

The Legend of Korra introduced the ability of spiritbending, and Korra learned this new form of bending as the series progressed. Her uncle Unalaq is the first person shown with the ability to spiritbend, which he developed as an advanced form of waterbending. The skill uses knowledge of healing and spirituality to alter a spirit’s negative energy so it can become positive energy. Changing the negative energy of a spirit to positive energy allows the spirit to pass and no longer be a threat to the physical world. Spiritbending can also be done in reverse to corrupt a spirit, which nearly happened to Korra during the series. Korra used spiritbending on multiple occasions to eliminate evil threats and became powerful enough with the ability to calm multiple negative spirits at once.
