Every Saw Movie Ranked Worst To Best (Including Spiral)

The Saw movie series ranks as one of the most successful and influential horror franchises of the 21st century. While not every Saw movie has been successful, the franchise remains strong, with the most recent film, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, being praised by critics for offering a fresh twist in the horror franchise.

Saw premiered in 2003, and the massive hit propelled filmmaker James Wan into Hollywood mainstream. Two years later in 2005, Saw 2 debuted and was a box office hit, launching the IP into a full-fledged horror movie franchise. Even without Wan as director, Saw 2 thrilled audiences with its interesting premise and captivating villain. A sequel was quickly developed, with movies coming out every October for several successive years.

The original Saw series came to an end in 2010 with Saw 7: The Final Chapter, which served to bring the saga of John “Jigsaw” Kramer and his apprentices full circle. That was until 2017, when soft reboot Jigsaw showed up, to mostly tepid reactions. Despite being touted as a reboot, Jigsaw ended up having a much more direct connection to the prior films than fans expected. After a year delay due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Chris Rock’s reboot Spiral: From the Book of Saw once again brought the franchise back to theaters. To date, there are nine movies in the Saw movie series — here’s how they rank, from worst to best.

9. Jigsaw (2017)

2017’s reboot Jigsaw attempted to return the Saw franchise to pop culture prominence but failed to capture the glory of previous Saw movies. It did fine financially thanks to a low budget, but Jigsaw offered nothing new to fans, being greeted by many with a resounding shrug.

8. Saw 7: The Final Chapter (2010)

The 3D movie Saw 7: The Final Chapter seemed designed to be the grand finale for the Saw horror franchise after Lionsgate had started to see diminishing financial returns. Unfortunately, it really wasn’t anything special, outside of a now-famous late-game twist involving the return of Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes). The main plot involving Bobby Dagen, a self-help guru who lied about surviving Jigsaw, just isn’t very interesting, and while the kills are good and gory, the creativity well was running dry.

7. Saw 4 (2007)

Saw 4 is largely seen as the place where the Saw movie series lost its way. It’s not that the horror sequel is abysmal — it does add some interesting layers to Jigsaw’s backstory and origins. However, Saw 4 did little to update the usual Saw traps and survivors schtick, outside of introducing some new variations on the established formula. Especially bothersome is the surprise return of Saw 2’s Detective Eric Matthews, which ultimately leads nowhere too interesting.

6. Saw 5 (2008)

The horror movie franchise got a boost with Saw 5. The sequel wasn’t better than Saw 4 by any wide margin, but it benefits from an expanded focus on sadistic Jigsaw apprentice Detective Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), who does his best to function as the film’s primary villain. While it’s true that Hoffman isn’t nearly as compelling as Jigsaw himself, with actor Tobin Bell still continuing to appear in flashbacks, he’s a cool, calculating antagonist, and the cat and mouse game between him and FBI agent Peter Strahm is interesting enough. The trap design remains delightfully sick, easily the most consistent element in the franchise.

5. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)

Spiral is the ninth Saw film to release, but after opening at #1 at the box office, it probably won’t be the last, with sequel rumors and fan theories running rampant already. The movie even hinted at its sequels itself, so it may be just a matter of time until Spiral 2 is announced as the 10th film in the Saw franchise. For now, though, the ninth installment falls squarely in the middle of the pack. Some Saw fans weren’t thrilled with its lack of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw, but at this point, it was time for the franchise to try and evolve beyond a man that died six movies ago, as great as Bell was in the role.

With comedy legend Chris Rock in the lead, Spiral takes an act to find its feet, but before too long, things go full Saw, albeit without the original killer or any of his apprentices. Spiral’s final twist is a bit too predictable though and is a far cry from the excellent reveal at the end of the first Saw. Ultimately, the most recent entry in the Saw movie series, Spiral, is a good movie, but fails to be a great one. The ending of Spiral may mean a sequel is possible, but it might be better for the Saw franchise to return to its roots. Spiral is not one of the best Saw movies, but it comfortably outdoes the four lower-ranked entries on this list.

4. Saw II (2005)

Every Saw Movie Ranked Worst To Best (Including Spiral)

A good number of Saw devotees will likely be taken aback to see Saw 2 this low, as some fans love it just as much as the first film. It’s not hard to argue in its favor, as Tobin Bell is in top form as Jigsaw, now that he doesn’t have to pretend to be dead for the whole movie. Saw 2 also had less of an indie feel. There are some absolutely terrifying traps, including the infamous needle pit (arguably Saw 2’s worst trap), and the glass box full of razor blades one must stick their hands into.

The reason Saw 2 isn’t higher on this list is its one big flaw: the aforementioned Detective Eric Matthews. The character is an entirely unsympathetic jerk with a violent temper played by Donnie Wahlberg. Having such an unlikable character prominently in the Saw sequel hurts the movie’s overall stakes. Since Eric is the protagonist, audiences often find themselves rooting for Jigsaw, which is the wrong direction for the Saw movie series in general.

3. Saw 6 (2009)

Interestingly, Saw 6 sports the best critical reaction of the franchise, outside of the first film. Sadly, the sixth movie in the Saw movie series has far and away the worst box office performance, being the only Saw entry to make less than $100 million worldwide. The most frustrating aspect of the film’s financial failings is that it was lauded by critics, and in many ways is one of — if not the — smartest entries in the Saw movie franchise.

Saw 6 focuses on the inadequacies of the American healthcare system, and how they essentially condemned John Kramer to death, was extremely resonant at the time, and perhaps even more so now. Not that Saw 6 is some high-minded exercise. It’s still gory and thrilling, delivering what fans expect from a Saw movie, including traps guaranteed to make most viewers squirm in their seats. It just manages to do that while also getting some sly jabs in at for-profit healthcare, and engaging in other bits of social commentary.

2. Saw 3 (2006)

Saw 3 is the first movie to complicate the Saw franchise timeline by offering flashbacks revealing John Kramer’s backstory. In the horror movie, Jigsaw dies — but still pulls off his most complex, challenging game yet. Amanda fails her own test as a punishment for crafting inescapable traps, and protagonist Jeff Denlon (Angus Macfadyen), a grieving father who has to choose between mercy and revenge, is probably the most sympathetic person ever forced to take part in Jigsaw’s trials. As it is, Saw 3 is clearly the best sequel.

1. Saw (2004)

Every Saw Movie Ranked Worst To Best (Including Spiral)

As intertwined as every entry in the Saw franchise has been to date, there’s only one logical choice for the top spot, and that’s director James Wan’s original film. Without Saw to set the stage, none of the other movies would’ve been possible on a narrative level, and every subsequent sequel builds on elements introduced in this first effort. Saw definitely has the lowest budget of the series, but thanks to Wan’s skills, never feels cheap, even if Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannell devour the scenery like it was made of cake. The ending twist is also deservedly praised, although it becomes a bit hard to justify if one thinks about it too closely.

Upcoming Saw Movies

While there are currently nine movies in the Saw series, there’s a good chance that more could be on the way. Not only are there already rumors about Spiral 2, but director Darren Lynn Bousman indicated in an interview with Screen Rant that a direct sequel to Jigsaw, or even a TV series set in the Saw universe, are also possibilities.
