Camp Crystal Lake started it all but it has become so much more. The Friday The 13th film franchise has taken on a life of its own. Fans can’t get enough of Jason and his psychotic ways, his insane mother and, later down the road, a resurrected Jason. The horror film franchise shows no signs of slowing down. There are talks of even more Jason-focused films being released in the future.

This includes a script that was recently completed by writer and director Tom McLoughlin of Jason Lives fame. So what makes these films so coveted? Truly there has only been a handful that did well at the box office and nowadays horror fans have way scarier films to look forward to. So why hang on to this franchise? Maybe a breakdown of the franchise will enlighten you.

12 Friday the 13th (1980)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

The original Friday The 13th film was a great film encompassing a mother’s “love” and revenge. Watching the camp counselor get picked off one by one wasn’t what made this film so good. It was how gruesome and brutal the deaths were. It was one of the first times that a film was able to get away with murdering innocent teens.

Well mostly innocent. It is no secret that the murderer in this original film was not even Jason but his mother Mrs. Voorhees. As far as slasher films go, this one was the leader of the pack for a while hence the numerous sequels, prequels and one-offs.

11 Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

Soon after the massive success of the first film, Friday the 13th Part 2 came out and picked up five years after the original film. It brought back three characters from the original film including Jason’s crazy mom and two camp counselors, one of which survived the end of the first film, Alice.

Fans are introduced to an alternative version of what happened to Jason that night. He didn’t drown but was able to swim to shore and lived in the woods plotting his revenge this entire time. Jason’s mom appears in flashbacks that haunt him and lead him on a journey to avenge her death.

10 Friday The 13th Part III (1982)

The character Ginny Field introduced in part 2 is back. The sole survivor is trying to move on with her life. She has returned to college, learns self-defense and plans to exact revenge on Jason. Oh wait, sorry that’s what was supposed to happen but actress Amy Steel did not want to reprise her role.

Instead, we pick up exactly where we left off with Jason unmasked looking for more revenge. He stalks and terrorizes a group of friends at a cabin in the woods. The film was less than spectacular and even the ending wasn’t anything to brag about. It ends the same way that the first film ended. Was this their attempt at a full circle?

9 Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

But was it really the final chapter? Clearly not seeing as, by now, fans of the franchise know that Jason is never truly dead. In an effort to kill off Jason forever, producer Frank Mancuso Jr. brought Jason back to Crystal Lake for one last good fight.

The killer is defeated by being hacked with a machete and cracking his skull open during a fight. Alas, real fans know that Jason will always find a way to come back. He walked right out of hell after all. This film was mainly for Mancuso Jr. to wrap up the series and work on other projects as he felt that he wasn’t respected for the work he put into the franchise.

8 Friday The 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

No good thing ever really comes to an end, does it? A brand new Friday the 13th film hit theatres a year later. The title, A New Beginning was meant to reinvent the franchise. This one takes place five years after Jason was hacked to death by machete. The main character Tommy has been haunted ever since that night and is struggling to move on with his life.

We later find out that the person killing people in this movie was an imposter. This means they stayed true to the story and kept Jason dead. For the most part, it was a lackluster film. You certainly get a few scares here and there but that’s about all you can expect from this one.

7 Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

Tommy is back and doing not so well. This film takes place one year after the last film. We see Tommy return home with a friend but he is dealing with hallucinations and horrible dreams from the years of trauma brought on by Jason. Tommy plans to go to Jason’s grave and encase his body with cement to assure he will never escape.

Clearly, Tommy’s plan does not go right and Jason again ends up wreaking havoc on the small town. Only this time writer Tom McLoughlin wrote a great script. It delivers a kickass story with frightening twists and turns. The film overall did very well. In fact, it was praised as being the best once since the original film.

6 Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

If you couldn’t tell already then this is the movie to prove it to you. Jason cannot and will not die. At the beginning of The New Blood, he is chained to the bottom of Crystal Lake. He is decomposing but still breathing away. Our protagonist Tina used her telekinetic powers to kill her abusive father in this very lake.

Tina is haunted by her actions so her mother takes her back to the lake as part of her treatment. Tina stands by the lake and wishes her father could come back. Instead, she resurrects Jason who wreaks complete and brutal havoc on Tina, her mother, and everyone else attempting to heal.

5 Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

Yet again intended to be the final film, Jason heads to New York to end it all. But before he gets there, he has to be revived again from the last killing. It just so happens that while he is decomposing in Crystal Lake his body is shocked back to life by the motor of a boat.

Jason hops aboard a boat set or NYC on a senior class trip. This is how he gets to NY to terrorize the people of the big apple. It disappointed at the box office and another Friday the 13th movie wasn’t made until 1993.

4 Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

This film just goes to show you, no matter what you do to Jason, he will find a way to kill. In Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, he is literally blown up into millions of little pieces. There is no coming back from that.

Of course, his spirit possesses a coroner’s body. He now has this vessel doing his dirty work. Jason goes around and possess other bodies and collects souls as he murders more and more people. By this point, it seems as though Jason has done more traveling than most. He always ends up in a new town (small, no doubt). There is always a lot of not so smart people to kill and, of course, there is never truly a way to get rid of him. Even at the end of this movie he is dragged to hell and manages to come back for another film.

3 Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

This shared-universe film pits Jason against Freddy Krueger, the killer from The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. First, it’s about who can get the most kills (in a subtle way). However, it’s mostly about Freddy using Jason to strike fear in the hearts of many of the people in Springwood. The more frightened they are, the easier it is for Freddy to come back and haunt their dreams.

We all know that Jason has no control so he ends up killing Freddy’s potential victims. Eventually, this leads to the two supernatural killers doing battle. Fans are on the edge of their seats to see who will come out alive. Well, as alive as someone resurrected or coming from hell could be.

2 Friday The 13th (2009)

Every Single Friday The 13th Movie (In Chronological Order)

So, you may be thinking this is unfair, as the 2009 Friday The 13th is a reboot. You’re right, there is no dispute here. However, we still need to acknowledge that, while it is a reboot, it is also a part of the franchise. Oh and chronologically, it also still comes before Jason X.

The movie comes into its own and isn’t a shot for shot remake of the original film. However, there are similar elements and some of the cast members have similar traits to the original cast members. This film does stand on its own. It was technically supposed to be an origin story with a more in shape, younger Jason running amuck.

1 Jason X (2002)

The reason why Jason X is last on the list is that it takes place in 2455. The film was released in 2002. Plus it takes place entirely in space. Jason was captured and frozen by the government in 2010 but ends up thawing out while in space.

At this point, Jason is just exacting revenge on people who have done nothing to him. This proves (as if any proof was needed) that he is just a maniac, psycho killer. Jason still goes hard on kills and even adds some new surprising elements. He can cryofreeze people and shatter them to pieces. Shocked emoji.
