Released earlier this month by Proletariat, Inc., Spellbreak offers so many powers that it’s easy to get confused. Beyond the supernatural gauntlets of power that define the game’s competition, there is another way for players to customize their heroes. Runes are spread all over Spellbreak’s map waiting to be claimed to tip the scales of battle by giving players a third superpower. From flight to invisibility, these wild cards are often the deciding factor in which Battlemage walks away with the crown.

Spellbreak is a dream come true for both superhero and video game fans. The Runes in the new Battle Royale game give players the opportunity to don the powers of their favorite heroes to wage war against one another in an effort to bamboozle opponents with strategy rather than brute force. While Runes cannot physically hurt opponents, some Runes offer increased mobility while others grant an advantage to the fight.

At launch, there are seven Runes in Spellbreak, scattered about the arena in varying degrees of rarity, from common to Legendary. Which of these mysterious Runes is the most powerful?

Flight

Flight in Spellbreak self explanatory. With the push of a button, players launch into the air with a sonic boom and cover a massive amount of ground. It’s great for procrastinators that get caught in the storm, because there is no “run” mechanism in Spellbreak. If a hero is wearing slow boots, Flight may be what keeps them one step ahead of their opponents.

Dash

While there are several Runes in Spellbreak that keep heroes airborne, Dash isn’t so limiting. Regardless of altitude, Dash grants a short burst of speed that can be useful in a tight spot. Whether a player is fleeing a fight, racing the storm, or dodging spells, Dash keeps other Battlemages in the dark about where and how to strike next.

Springstep

Spellbreak’s map is unforgiving with its high peaks and towers. Oftentimes the short levitation burst that all heroes possess isn’t enough to reach a tall spot. Springstep grants players an impressive jump height while not compromising their speed. It can be used to finish climbing a mountain, or to leap out of the way of a Pyromancer’s incoming fireball. Springstep can give players an extra edge to claim the high ground and a great advantage.

Featherfall

While similar to Springstep, the Featherfall Rune in Spellbreak takes it to a new level. Players are sent quickly into the air, but significantly higher than with Springstep. Featherfall, however, grants players a parachute-like descent that can slow things down if there’s a battle nearby. Featherfall is a great way to get a quick birds eye view of the action while offering players more air time & mobility.

Wolf’s Blood

Perhaps the most unique Rune in Spellbreak is Wolf’s Blood. It does nothing to the hero using it, but instead highlights every nearby opponent. With an audible howl, players can see their enemies through walls and predict their next moves to hopefully gain the upper hand. It’s a great tool to combat players that try to run and hide.

Invisibility

With this Rune, players can disappear at will, forcing opponents to go on the search or give up entirely. Invisibility works great in Spellbreak between buildings and cliffs, but also is invaluable during a fight against multiple mages. While it does leave a faint outline of the hero using it, Invisibility can grant players that extra few seconds needed to regain health or to avoid a dangerous situation.

Teleport

Another Rune in Spellbreak that offers great mobility is Teleport. Players can aim a portal several yards ahead at which they can reappear in an instant. Teleport can be very useful, not only in reaching new locations, but in guaranteeing heroes aren’t seen traveling out in the open.

The rarity of Runes defines their cooldown rates. The rarer the Rune, the sooner players can use them again. As far as which Rune is best, it depends entirely on a player’s preference. If mobility is the goal, Flight or Teleport are king. If looking for a fight, players may decide Wolf’s Blood or Invisibility are the best. Regardless, Runes are a brilliant addition to Spellbreak’s gameplay, offering a wide array of options to personalize the experience.
