Every Stephen King & Frank Darabont Collaboration

Frank Darabont has directed some of the greatest Stephen King movie adaptations ever, and here’s every time they’ve collaborated so far. One of the most prolific authors of all time, King is also one of the most adapted, taking the title when not considering authors whose work is in the public domain. With that in mind, many filmmakers have tried their hand at bringing King’s books to life, but sadly, only a select few directors succeed in a way that wows fans.

Some examples of that league include Stanley Kubrick with The Shining, John Carpenter with Christine, and Brian De Palma with Carrie. Fewer still though are those who get multiple chances to adapt King for the screen. The most prolific of those is Mick Garris, who’s become a close friend of King’s, and has directed projects like The Stand, The Shining remake, and Sleepwalkers. However, when it comes to quality among King adapters, no one really touches Frank Darabont.

Darabont has adapted multiple King stories, and they’ve all arguably been terrific. He may not have the lengthy King-based resume of Garris, but he definitely has a much higher hit to miss ratio, and it’s impossible to imagine him directing something as bad as Riding the Bullet.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

One of the most acclaimed films in history, The Shawshank Redemption was written and directed by Frank Darabont, and based on Stephen King’s novella “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” from the collection Different Seasons. Tim Robbins stars as Andy Dufresne, a man convicted for the murders of his wife and her lover, although he maintains his innocence. While at the titular prison, Andy meets and befriends Red (Morgan Freeman), the man inside capable of getting just about anything someone might need. The Shawshank Redemption was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, but lost to Forrest Gump.

The Green Mile (1999)

Darabont again wrote and directed The Green Mile, based on King’s 1996 novel of the same name. While not quite as beloved as The Shawshank Redemption, this fellow prison-set tale is still generally regarded as one of the best King adaptations of all time. It also continued the pattern of King’s rare non-horror stories being prone to getting better movie adaptations than his traditional horror tales. The cast is full of recognizable faces, including Tom Hanks, James Cromwell, David Morse, Jeffrey DeMunn, William Sadler, Gary Sinise, and the late Michael Clarke Duncan.

The Mist (2007)

With The Mist, Frank Darabont finally wrote and directed King’s bread and butter, a straight up horror story. He proved just as adept in that department, producing yet another top-tier King adaptation, this time of a 1980 novella found in the Skeleton Crew collection. The Mist sports another great cast, including Thomas Jane, Toby Jones, Laurie Holden, Marcia Gay Harden, and Andre Braugher. Darabont also brings impressive life to Stephen King’s Lovecraftian creatures, creating some of the most unsettling monsters ever seen in a mainstream horror movie.
