Every Upcoming Godzilla Movie After King of the Monsters

What are the next Godzilla movies that will release after Godzilla: King of the Monsters? The atomic fire-breathing Titan is the centerpiece of Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse. Director Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the third chapter of this cinematic universe that pits the Big G against other classic Toho kaiju like Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah for the fate of the world.

The MonsterVerse kicked off in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, which re-introduced the legendary giant lizard as the world’s protector against other giant monsters living underneath the Earth. It also established Monarch, a human agency with a mission of “Discovery and Defense in a Time of Monsters”, as a key part of the story. 2017’s Kong: Skull Island was set in the 1970s, and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ film established King Kong as part of the MonsterVerse; the titular ape was the last defender of Skull Island against the creatures crawling up from beneath it. Now, Godzilla: King of the Monsters depicts the awakening of multiple monsters, now called Titans, all over the Earth. Godzilla mobilizes to fight the most dangerous one of all, Ghidorah, a world-killing three-headed dragon.

The epic clash of the Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters isn’t the end of the story, however. After Godzilla collides with Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah, he has at least one more confirmed mega-fight fans can look forward to. With the MonsterVerse poised to continue, here are the next Godzilla films on the horizon:

Godzilla Vs. Kong (2020)

Godzilla vs. Kong will be the epic smackdown between the two most famous giant monsters in movies. Scheduled to be released on March 13, 2020, Godzilla vs. Kong is directed by Adam Wingard (Blair Witch) and stars Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Alexander Skarsgård, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Jessica Henwick, Eiza González, and Lance Reddick. The film has already wrapped principal photography, and not only will the great ape fight the fire-breathing lizard, the story is also expected to explore the origins of the Titans as a human conspiracy threatens to wipe out all of the monsters. Since Kong: Skull Island was set in 1973, Godzilla vs. Kong also re-introduces the massive ape into the present-day MonsterVerse era, and Kong is expected to have grown large enough to match up equally with Godzilla.

Godzilla 3 (Maybe)

Godzilla 3 hasn’t been officially announced yet, but Warner Bros. is clearly hoping King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong will be big enough hits to warrant Godzilla 3. In fact, it’s worth sitting through Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ credits and post-credits scene to get tantalizing clues to what movies might happen next, and that includes a potential Godzilla 3. Indeed, Warner Bros. and Legendary would let Godzilla fight forever (or as long as fans would flock to these movies).

There Are Plans For More MonsterVerse Movies

Since we know Godzilla will fight Kong next year, it’s obvious that the Big G survives Godzilla: King of the Monsters. However, the franchise has cleverly plotted out a macro-story about the Titans and their history that can continue into future MonsterVerse films. This could include Godzilla 3 and another Kong film is also possible, although whether a Kong sequel fills in the ape’s story in the decades between Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters or is set in the present-day MonsterVerse timeline is anyone’s guess at this point. And while Godzilla and Kong are the MonsterVerse’s two biggest marquee names, many other Titans are introduced in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Depending on what happens and how fans react, some of them could potentially receive MonsterVerse spinoffs as well.
