Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

Having been inspired by the adventure serials of the 1930s, George Lucas’ movies are filled with interesting villains. The Star Wars movies have all kinds of baddies, from Sith Lords to Imperial admirals to armies of droids, with a very black-and-white view of good and evil.

In the Indiana Jones franchise, the titular archeologist has faced real-world villains, such as Nazi officers and Soviet generals and businessmen, and each of them has a pulpy twist, like a smarmy attitude or a memorable catchphrase or the desire to be immortal. So, here is Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies, Ranked.

10 Mac

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

“Jonesy!!!” Ray Winstone joined Indiana Jones’ posse in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as George “Mac” Michale, an irritating spy who betrayed Indy for the Soviets and then betrayed the Soviets for Indy. Mac was conceived to represent confusion surrounding the Cold War, as he didn’t know which side to choose and played both of them.

But as a constantly flip-flopping double agent, he came off as predictable and bland. His changing of sides was more obvious than It’s Always Sunny’s own Mac in the episode “Frank Retires” – “I’m playing both sides, so that I always come out on top.”

9 Chattar Lal

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

One of the main antagonists in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Chattar Lal is the Prime Minister of Pankot who welcomes in Indy, Willie, and Short Round, seemingly with open arms. At first, it seems like the most villainous thing he’ll do is feeding them monkey brains during the banquet.

However, he turns out to secretly be working with the Thuggee cult. What makes Chattar Lal an interesting villain is that he maintains a calm demeanor and, for all intents and purposes, he’s just a regular guy. But he’s hiding some very dark motivations behind that inconspicuous smile.

8 Antonin Dovchenko

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

Antonin Dovchenko was basically Irina Spalko’s Soviet muscle in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. He’s essentially a goon. He was created as an homage to the Luftwaffe mechanic who fought Indy in Raiders. It’s always fun to see Indy have to fight a henchman who’s much bigger and stronger than him.

In Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Dovchenko fills that role on a few occasions. It’s just a shame that his death scene is so underwhelming. In one of the movie’s many bizarre VFX-laden sequences (Shia LaBeouf teaming up with some CG monkeys, Indy surviving a CG nuke in a CG fridge, etc.), Dovchenko is eaten alive by CG ants.

7 Lao Che

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

The opening Shanghai nightclub sequence in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom has become iconic, even if the rest of the movie alienated some fans with its dark subject matter and imperialist sympathies. Lao Che is the Chinese gangster who tricks Indy into drinking some poison and then teases him with the antidote. As a shootout breaks out in the nightclub, Lao Che tosses the antidote into the crowd of fleeing civilians.

This character comes back to haunt Indy, as he escapes with Willie and Short Round on a plane that the notorious gangster happens to own. So, in the middle of the night, the pilots jump out, leaving the heroes hurtling towards a mountain.

6 Ernst Vogel

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

In The Last Crusade, Ernst Vogel is a brutal S.S. colonel that enjoys terrorizing Indy. He has an unforgettable death scene, as he rides a tank off a cliff, although it does feature some dreadful primitive visual effects.

The top choice for the role of Vogel was Julian Glover, who had previously played General Veers in The Empire Strikes Back, but producer Robert Watts thought he’d be better suited to the role of Walter Donovan, and he ended up playing him instead. (This turned out to be the perfect casting.) The actor they got in the end, Michael Byrne, does a great job of making Vogel a guy that you love to hate.

5 Irina Spalko

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

Cate Blanchett always relishes the chance to play a flamboyant villain. She played Thor’s long-lost half-sister Hela in Thor: Ragnarok as a mustache-twirling menace, and a decade earlier, she brought the same blend of ominous intimidation and delirious fun to Irina Spalko, the Soviet official with a dangerous lust for knowledge, in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The only downside of this character is her involvement in the story, as she’s the one who attaches the skull to the rest of the crystal skeleton, combining them all into a dreadfully rendered CGI alien, hammering the final nail into the Indiana Jones franchise’s coffin.

4 Major Toht

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

Raiders of the Lost Ark’s primary Nazi villain, Major Toht, was originally conceived with a mechanical arm, and while that would’ve been pretty awesome, the character in his final form is frightening enough.

From the unnerving smile that actor Ronald Lacey nailed every time to his cool-headed, Hans Landa-like behavior, Major Toht was a truly memorable villain. And like any great villain, he also had a memorable death scene. At the end of Raiders, when the Nazis open the Ark of the Covenant, everyone’s faces melt off – and Toht’s is shown in gruesome detail, almost earning Raiders an R rating.

3 Walter Donovan

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

Played by Julian Glover, who had previously played General Veers in the opening Hoth sequence in The Empire Strikes Back, Walter Donovan is the shady American businessman who wants to acquire the Holy Grail so that he can achieve immortality in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

He turned out to be secretly working with the Nazis, which made him a physical villain as well as a philosophical one. In an early draft of the script, he was given Vogel’s death – falling off a cliff on the tank – but the death he has in the film’s final form (crumbling into nothing when he “chose poorly”) is much more fitting and memorable.

2 Mola Ram

Every Villain From The Indiana Jones Movies Ranked

In the first, third, and fourth Indiana Jones films, the villains are opposing military forces, like the Nazis or the Soviets. But the second one did something a little different. The villains all belong to a cult – the Thuggee cult – and that cult’s ruthless leader is Mola Ram.

Mola Ram is a really scary villain. He ritualistically lowers human sacrifices into a fiery pit without thinking twice. At the end of the movie, as he and Indy hang from a severed rope bridge on the side of a cliff, Indy manages to use his hubris against him, turning his precious Sankara Stones against him.

1 René Belloq

Introduced in the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, René Belloq is Indy’s closest rival. Like all great villains, he is the hero’s ideological opposite, yet their motivations are strikingly similar. When we first meet Belloq, he’s outsmarting Indy with a huge smile on his face. While Indy was going into the ancient temple to retrieve the Golden Idol, facing all the danger involved with nabbing it, Belloq was teaming up with the local Hovito tribe to set a trap for Indy outside the temple.

This sequence establishes the tone of the movie, Indy as a character, and his relationship with Belloq. It’s one of the greatest opening scenes in film history.
