Everything We Know About Buffys Revival

It feels like ages since any news on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot/revival was released, but the new series is still technically in development, as far as anyone knows. The project was announced in 2018, but extended silences on development, Disney’s purchase of Fox, and the slew of recent abuse and misconduct allegations against Joss Whedon have thrown the show’s very existence into question. So what exactly is going on with the new Buffy series?

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. The show spawned one major spinoff, Angel, which ran for five seasons of its own, as well as numerous video games, novels, and comic books. The comics have been particularly popular among fans, as they’ve continued the story of the original characters as stand-ins for additional seasons. The franchise has remained immensely popular over the years, leading to the announcement of a new TV series in 2018.

However, since that initial announcement, details on the Buffy revival have been scarce. The project hasn’t been officially canceled, but there hasn’t been any clear movement forward either. Here’s everything we know right now about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival.

Buffy’s Rumored Revival

Everything We Know About Buffys Revival

In 2018, it was officially announced that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival series was in the early stages of development. Joss Whedon was attached as an executive producer, while Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas) would serve as showrunner. The official announcements about the revival at the time promised a show that would put diversity first and deal with real modern-day issues. The studio was reportedly looking for a black lead actress, and Owusu-Breen put out a statement of her own implying that the new show would be a sequel series with a different Slayer, rather than a full-on retelling of the original. Since that early series of reveals, however, very little has been shared publicly about the new Buffy series.

Buffy Revival’s Cast

No official casting news ever came out about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, other than the fact that it was planned for a black actress to play the leading role. Since Owusu-Breen said the show would be a sequel rather than a reboot, there would inherently be opportunities for members of the original cast to appear, especially since their characters have had plenty of extra stories in the graphic novels. Many of Buffy’s original actors, however, including Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, have said they wouldn’t be interested in returning to the franchise, though they’ve wished the revival well. Back when the original revival announcement was made, The Flash actress Jessica Parker Kennedy also took to social media to declare her intense interest in playing the new Slayer.

Buffy Revival’s Story

Everything We Know About Buffys Revival

If Owusu-Breen’s statement from a few years ago is true, and the new Buffy show was planned as a sequel rather than a remake, there are nearly endless possibilities for where the story could go. The Buffy comics have built out a lot more lore for the overall world of the franchise, which could be drawn from to varying extents in a proper new TV series. Even if the comics are disregarded, a sequel would still have to contend with the events of Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7, which saw every potential Slayer in the world granted supernatural abilities at the same time, creating an army of empowered young women to battle the demons and the forces of darkness. That could be a great setup for a new show, as the writers could pick and choose any Slayer in any location and include others throughout as desired. The original announcements also emphasized that the new Buffy show would have a diverse cast and be centered on real-world issues as well as the supernatural.

Will A Buffy Revival Still Happen?

With so much time having passed without more development news on the Buffy revival, its production unfortunately looks unlikely. That’s only been exacerbated by the recent slew of allegations against Joss Whedon from former Buffy cast and crew members, which describe a pattern of cruel behavior and abuse of power from the show’s creator. Whedon left his latest show, the upcoming HBO fantasy series The Nevers, in 2020, and he has yet to officially comment on the many accusations against him. With Whedon’s reputation at an all-time low and production on the new series seemingly ground to a halt, the odds aren’t looking good. Still, there’s always a chance the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival could find new life in the future.
