Everything We Know About Coral Island

Farming simulation games will be getting another new title this year, with the upcoming release of Coral Island on Steam later in 2021. Coral Island is an indie farming game inspired by popular titles like Story of Seasons, and the game will be set on a tropical island with a focus on farming, conservation, socialization, and exploration, featuring many different areas to explore both above and under the sea.

Like many indie games, Coral Island was backed on Kickstarter. The game’s original goal was 70,000 dollars, but has blown past the needed funding and currently sits at over 1.6 million dollars. Because of this every stretch goal was met, and Coral Island is anticipated to be loaded down with additional content like island hopping and multi-player support. Much like Stardew Valley, the developer’s goal is to produce a top-quality game for farming fans and intends to put every extra Kickstarter dollar into delivering a solid title.

Like many other farming games, Coral Island focuses on restoring a run-down plot of land and turning it into an expansive functioning farmstead. Planting crops and trees, as well as keeping livestock, will take up the majority of a player’s time. Popular mechanics from Stardew Valley can be seen in promotional images on developer Stairway Games’ website, including kegs, beehives, mills, and sprinklers. It also appears that many of each device can be placed at a time, which is good news for those who enjoy turning a farm’s produce into refined goods.

Coral Island Will Have Many Different Locations To Explore

There will also be a number of locations included on the island map in Coral Island. Besides the farm and town itself, it appears there will also be sprawling beaches, a mine, and coral reefs for players to investigate. The reef is home to a Merfolk Village, which was part of the stretch goals for the Kickstarter campaign. Investigating the reef exposes the pollution damaging it, and it is up to the player to help remove the garbage and rescue the habitat before it can be destroyed. It appears mining in the caves will also have a combat element, much like mining in Stardew Valley, making the collection of ore a little less tedious and repetitive.

Coral Island will also offer a social element for those who enjoy Animal Crossing: New Horizons, or the social elements of other farming games. There are 40 different townsfolk living in Coral Island, and each has a special story to unravel. There are also 16 romanceable characters to date and marry. All characters are romanceable, regardless of the player’s own gender. This LGBTQA+ inclusion is great for diverse players who want to be able to relate to the relationship and gender of their own character. Marriage can also include having children, but it is an entirely optional feature for those who are interested in raising a family with their in-game spouse.

Coral Island Includes 2D Hand-drawn Character Portraits

The art direction for farming sims has a wide variety of styles. Titles like Stardew Valley are done in a classic, pixelated style, while Story of Seasons has adopted a unique 3D style with vibrant colors and cute animal designs. Harvest Moon has integrated design choices similar to Japanese anime art styles, with big expressions and gestures. Coral Island has taken its own twist, using 3D models for the character sprites, and detailed models for crops, trees, and buildings. The developers have also included an exciting touch. Each character has their own 2D art portrait and full-body design. This extra detail gives the character designs a lot of personality. The cast of available townsfolk and dateable characters are widely diverse and interesting, with ages and personal styles varying greatly. This gives the town a realistic and unique feel compared to other farming sims that are often lacking in diverse characters

Coral Island will also allow in-depth character customization. Characters will be fully customizable, with different body types, hairstyles, skin colors, and gender-neutral options. Players will be able to pick a female, male, or non-binary honorific as well. It is currently unknown if clothing can be bought or made to shake up character wardrobes, but hopefully, more information on style will be released in upcoming updates. There will also be full customization of the main character’s home. Items can be moved around and set up to personal preference, and details on the outside of the house can be customized with a range of colors and styles. This is a nice change similar to Animal Crossing home designs, for those who enjoy setting a home up just to their liking.

There will be no shortage of variety in Coral Island. According to Coral Island’s Kickstarter page, there are 75 different plantable items including crops, fruit plants, and fruit trees. There are both coop and barn animals, with familiar options like cows and chickens as well as more exotic species like Peafowl and Luwak. There are numerous varieties of fish that start to expand when the coral reef is restored and the environment is cleaned up, which will include legendary fish. Plantable crops can receive quality upgrades at a lab on the island, as well as fodder and bait. This considerable selection will keep gameplay interesting and engaging for those who want to sample and see everything Coral Island has to offer.

There will also be a skill tree included in Coral Island. This tree is more complex than the skill levels of Stardew Valley. Players will earn skill points, which can then be divided into skills on the skill tree. These skills offer benefits and perks when unlocked, and have a range of different effects. Having control over which skills to upgrade also gives a level of choice for how players may want to approach their game. Some could choose to focus on crop raising while others may want to put more time into livestock or mining. Coral Island appears to have a large number of exciting things to offer fans of farming sim games, and hopefully more information about its upcoming release will be available soon for those excited to give the tropical farming adventure a try.
