Everything We Know About Godzilla vs Kong

Updated: February 17, 2021

Godzilla vs. Kong is the highly-anticipated and long-delayed fourth installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. The movie will follow the ending of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which set up a battle between the new alpha of the Titans and the King of Skull Island in the movie’s credits.

Despite the fact that the the two pop culture icons have been around more than half a century, they’ve only clashed one time on the big screen thus far. Over 50 years after their first fight in Toho’s King Kong vs. Godzilla, the two Titans will face each other again in Godzilla vs. Kong.

This is a showdown that Legendary has had in the works as far back as 2015. It was known two years before the release of Kong’s solo movie, Kong: Skull Island, that he’d be coming to blows with the King of the Monsters, and that it would happen after two more movies released: Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Godzilla vs Kong Release Date

Everything We Know About Godzilla vs Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong’s release date has been moved around several times. For a while, it was scheduled for a March 2020 release before the film was pushed back to November 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Warner Bros. once again delayed the film due to continued theater closures and health safety issues, shifting Godzilla vs. Kong to May 21, 2021. However, it was announced that all Warner Bros. films releasing in 2021 would simultaneously be made available on HBO Max and in theaters. Thus, Godzilla vs. Kong will finally bow on March 31, 2021.

Godzilla vs. Kong Story Details

Everything We Know About Godzilla vs Kong

According to the Godzilla vs. Kong official synopsis, Godzilla and Kong will fight it out in a “spectacular battle for the ages”. Exactly why they’ll be at odds hasn’t been revealed, but it is known that their fight will have a definitive winner. Also, an action figure leak spoiled that Mechagodzilla – Godzilla’s robotic counterpart from Toho’s movies – will be included, possibly as the main antagonist who forces the two to unite.

As for the movie’s human story, Monarch will be investigating the origin of the Titans. Based on the teases provided by the King of the Monsters credits, the organization will accomplish this by exploring the Hollow Earth entry point under Skull Island. Further complicating matters for the characters will be the addition of a villainous group who have orchestrated a conspiracy to eradicate all of the Titans.

Godzilla vs. Kong Cast

Everything We Know About Godzilla vs Kong

Godzilla vs. Kong will feature a mostly new cast, but will be bringing back three cast members from King of the Monsters. Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, and Zhang Ziyi will be reprising their roles as Mark Russell, Madison Russell, and Dr. Chen, respectively. Billed as the lead is Alexander Skaarsgãrd, who will play a geologist with a connection to Kong. Also appearing in the movie are Bryan Tyree Henry, Eiza González, Jessica Henwick, Demián Bichir, Lance Reddick, Shun Oguri, Julian Dennison, and Rebecca Hall.

MonsterVerse’s Future After Godzilla vs Kong

Legendary hasn’t announced another MonsterVerse movie since it confirmed Godzilla vs. Kong was in development in 2015. So far, it appears that when audiences see Godzilla vs. Kong in theaters/HBO Max, it won’t be clear if either Titan has a future after the film. That’s largely because Godzilla: King of the Monsters wasn’t successful enough on its own to guarantee the MonsterVerse’s survival. Though it wasn’t a failure, it wasn’t necessarily a hit either. Since it couldn’t offer reassurance that the MonsterVerse will continue to be met with success, it makes sense that what comes next will depend on how well Godzilla vs. Kong performs. If it meets box office expectations, Godzilla 3 or Kong 2 (or both) could be announced later.
