It looks as though Sony is gaining momentum with their Kraven the Hunter solo film set in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, and new details have emerged into its production and casting – here’s everything we know so far. A Kraven film has been in development for a number of years, even before the debut of Tom Holland as Spider-Man, and it looks as though new information is beginning to be revealed such as the announcement of Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role along with a scheduled release date revealed.
The Kraven movie will be the next in Sony’s live-action slate of movies centered on the origin stories of villains and antiheroes from Spider-Man’s rogue’s gallery. That started with 2018’s Venom, starring Tom Hardy in the titular role, with sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage set for release later this year. Early next year, Morbius, with Jared Leto in the lead, will be hitting theaters as the second of Spider-Man’s villains to get the movie treatment. As such, Sony was eager to get the ball rolling in earnest on Kraven.
While Sergei Kravinoff, a.k.a. Kraven the Hunter, is one of Spider-Man deadliest foes, he’s also one of the most unique. As such, the impressive hunter is the perfect choice to receive a live-action adaptation on the big screen. Here’s everything we know about Kraven the Hunter including the cast, story details, release date, and its potential connection to Disney’s MCU and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
Kraven The Hunter Release Date
Kraven the Hunter is slated for release on January 13th, 2023. This means that production will most likely begin either at the end of 2021 or early the following year in 2022. Kraven will be directed by J.C. Chandor (who also directed Netflix’s Triple Frontier), with the script coming from Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk.
Kraven the Hunter will be Sony’s fourth villain project, following the success of Tom Hardy’s Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage coming in late 2021, as well as Morbius which is scheduled for 2022 starring Jared Leto in the titular role.
Kraven The Hunter Cast
Sony has confirmed that Kraven will be played by actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s certainly no stranger when it comes to superhero roles, playing the titular hero in the Kick-Ass films as well as the MCU’s Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This also falls into line with early reports that Sony was looking for an actor resembling Joel Kinnaman for their leading role, and Taylor-Johnson certainly seems to fit that bill. However, there were also reports that Keanu Reeves was also approached by Sony for the role as well.
There’s also been speculation that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could be featured in the film to some degree, though that’s generally the hope most fans have whenever Sony releases a new film set in the SPUMC. That being said, Spider-Man and Kraven do have some very dynamic stories in Marvel comics that would make Peter Parker’s inclusion extremely entertaining.
Kraven The Hunter Story Details
In terms of Kraven the Hunter’s plot and narrative, writer Richard Wenk has spoken about the story being largely inspired by “Kraven’s Last Hunt”, arguably the biggest and most dynamic Kraven story from the comics and featuring an epic showdown with Spider-Man. In an interview with the Discussing Film podcast, Wenk has said that he’d liked to see Kraven and the Webslinger coming face-to-face in the film: “I think that where we’re all circling is that this is Kraven’s Last Hunt, and whether this is the precursor to that movie, whether it will include it, we’re talking about those things.”
While any number of things could change, “Kraven’s Last Hunt” would certainly be worthwhile, especially if it includes Spider-Man himself. It’s also possible that Kraven’s debut film could have its focus on the hunter himself and his origins, with Spider-Man being featured in a potential sequel. Wenk did mention the possibility of the film being a two-part narrative.
Kraven The Hunter MCU Connections
As far as any MCU connections the film might have, Sony has maintained that their SPUMC is “adjacent” to the MCU, with Spider-Man being the bridge. As an example, Micheal Keaton’s Vulture from the MCU’s Spider-Man: Homecoming will have a role in Morbius, so it’s certainly possible that Kraven could feature other Spider-Man characters who’ve spent time in the MCU as well.
In any case, more details are sure to come as Kraven the Hunter’s release date gets closer, and it will be interesting to see what Sony has in store with Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s take on the greatest hunter in Marvel Comics. Here’s hoping it’s as epic and intense as the character himself.
